To tell ya the truth, if Wolfgang Van Halen was actually playing his bass on a couple songs or all of them is pretty much a non-factor for me. Seriously, if you went to the show by paying your hard earned dime and enjoyed the experience, who is to say otherwise? Dave Roth and Edward Van Halen were finally reunited upon a stage. Some people have been waiting 20 odd years for this. Hooray.
OK. Yet for me, this entire enterprise was an approximation of Van Halen, from the get-go. And as such, I chose to opt out. I'll admit there is a certain cynicism in that decision, but it has been born out by what has taken place at the behest of the "band's" leader. To be a fan of VH these days means that you will purchase expensive products, like signature guitars, various pedals and even tennis shoes, all stating the addendum "This is what I use". The total irony in that advertising staple is the fellow has not used any of these devices to create new music since sometime over a decade ago. (Sorry Mr. Van Halen, three crummy Hagar rejects on a second "Best Of" record within less than a decade and a couple wank-jobs for a truly awful porn flick do not constitute artistry let alone quality, ya fuckin' dork.)
So all in all, what does it matter if Wolfie played or not? At this point, Van Halen honesty borders upon masochism for those that still believe in this band. At least that is how I see it these days.
