Most who say Mike's not so great on bass know nothing of the instrument nor it's role in the musical landscape.

A guy who doesn't know his way around a bass don't get an invite to share the stage with the likes of EVH, Satriani, Billy Gibbons, Eric Clapton, BB King, etc... nuff said...

Yup. Bands pretty much care if you can stay in the pocket. Mike also sings great and seems easy to get along with. All pluses and lot's of bands are looking for that guy.

Mike's job in Van Halen was to add flavor. You had Roth, Alex, and Eddie going crazy and Mike had to work inside that hurricane and did it very well. He didn't interject too much and didn't hide behind the drum kit either. He was the perfect bass player for that band and a lot of the old albums do have some interesting bass playing. Fair Warning comes to mind. I love the bass work on Dirty Movies.

There's a few other cuntributing factors too... A good majority of our resident VH/CLR experts here, especially those much under 40 have never listened to CVH on much more than cheap TV/computer speakers, tiny headphones or crappy old boom boxes. None of which reproduce bass frequencies worth a shit...

You forget. Most people under 40 never got to hear the REAL Van Halen they way it should be heard....through an 80,000-watt PA system in an arena at HIGH MOTHERFUCKING VOLUME.

bassplayer could be heard for miles.

And even though bassplayer's lines in VH were not some kinda jazz freakout stuff like Jaco, he is a good solid player who plays circles around Van Halen Junior.
