Mike's job in Van Halen was to add flavor. You had Roth, Alex, and Eddie going crazy and Mike had to work inside that hurricane and did it very well. He didn't interject too much and didn't hide behind the drum kit either. He was the perfect bass player for that band and a lot of the old albums do have some interesting bass playing. Fair Warning comes to mind. I love the bass work on Dirty Movies.No! You can't have the keys to the wine cellar!Comment

There's a few other cuntributing factors too... A good majority of our resident VH/CLR experts here, especially those much under 40 have never listened to CVH on much more than cheap TV/computer speakers, tiny headphones or crappy old boom boxes. None of which reproduce bass frequencies worth a shit...
bassplayer could be heard for miles.
And even though bassplayer's lines in VH were not some kinda jazz freakout stuff like Jaco, he is a good solid player who plays circles around Van Halen Junior.Comment
