The number one reason nothing has ever been released is Ed ain't dead yet...

Ed's been either too lazy or too embarrassed of his drunk assed antics... plus too vain & self conscience to allow nonperfection to go out the door. I honestly think he's held it back for all these years because of his insecurity and anger with Dave. Now he's too chickenshit to confront his mistakes!!
ZahZoo - d'you know anything about Dennis Dragon, and what demos VH recorded at his studion in Malibu in '77? I've heard they cut 'Pretty Woman' there in '77 (five years before they did it again) - a guy called Harvey Kubernik, a legit LA music industry guy, said he was there. Whether or not there is anything of interest, I buy it. Dennis Dragon was a big buddy of Donn Landee ...

Here is the link Zahzoo provided sometime in the last two years regarding what was stored at Pacific Archives. Makes you wonder where this stuff is now.

              No live album

There is no way, Ed will release a live album/dvd, from the archives, as Fat Anthony, will feature in that material!

Ed is trying to establish Wolfie, as the bass player, so, he won`t give Source boy, any further credit!

The warning signs, of camp trouble, for me, is the fact, that the live album/dvd, of the 2007/2008 tour, was shelved!

Ed/Al came out with a lame excuse, about working on a new studio album!
Well, if that was true, why announce the live album, in the first place?
Dave said at the 2007 tour, press conference, that they would be working on a new album, after the tour!

What`s the real reason, for the live album being shelved? = Dave`s out!

                Steve,
They could remix the vids and delete MA if they want...

Dave is not out, I think they realized after all these
alcohol drenched years, he is the spark.
There will be another tour, hopefully new stuff,
but Dave is in, for the rest of this bands existance.

Mew material is still a possibility.

Never heard of Dragon or any demos... it's possible.

Pop a note to bradman@van-halen.com and ask him. He's still their webmaster and is sitting on their former Vault of VH history they used to publish on their web site. He may have some info on this or could ask Mike or the Sisters about it. He's usually still good about responding to stuff like this...

Think it may well have to do more with ownership issues and contractual snares.

Trying to go back and sort out the various production companies involved in the filming, determine what royalty rights they were owed should the footage be developed for mass-market consumption...or if WB still owns the film rights...and working out payment compromises and schedules between WB and the entity currently known as Van Halen...and all of THAT is assuming that the source footage can be physically accounted for and isn't in several different film warehouses...

                    Who the fuck knows?

I say give it all to Cato. He'd manufacture something cool out of it (Napalm Up Your Ass Vol. 2).

                      Man,
I remember seeing promos for the Showtime package way back in the day, and one of the selling points was the US Festival special they'd be airing.
I can recall clear as a bell them showing a slow-mo clip of Dave doing the toe-touch off the drum riser...
We had cable, but no pay channels. When I asked my Dad, he didn't say no, but the look pretty much said: "you must be joking!"
With Ozzy, the lack of concert footage is understandable, as the personnel he's gone through is probably a royalty nightmare, and I don't get the feeling $haron likes to part with the cash very much
With VH, it's too bad there's a problem there, if that's the case, as there's just the four of them. Is/was it a pride thing with Dave (from before) and with Mike now? Or does Ed truly just not give a flying fuck?
You would think someone, somewhere in the organization would inform him of how successful a double disc of the Oakland shows would be...or any classic show for that matter.
I once saw about ten minutes of the Largo '82 show through a friend of a friend while at his home, and wondered why Ed hadn't released this on his own.
Largo was filmed from house cameras, no? I find it odd that you may be in posession of a decent amount of historical footage, but care not to do a thing with it?
Lastly...sorry for the dumb-ass noob question, but can someone enlighten me as to what the Napalm DVD is? I'm guessing fan-made comp of boot vids...

                      T.

Here's the best I could do for the 1984 tour, mostly from Montreal and mostly with video but some with only audio...

For once, King Edward speaks the truth. The performance by the band is really crummy, with the instrumentalists at times sounding like three guys playing entirely different songs. And Roth's voice is in rough shape, sounding hoarse and out of breath throughout. This was at the point that the band really didn't seem to care about the quality of the shows all that much.

Once every six months or so, the footage from the US Festival shows up repackaged at Amazon. These releases are completely unauthorized, more often than not coming from an outfit named Classic Rock Legends. The reproduction is in most cases either ghastly or absurd, with misleading titles like Van Halen: Live Rarities. This release from 2008 featured a bizarre red, white and blue American flag border around the video image, thus letter boxing the footage into a strangely small window. (See below)

Do not purchase these things, as they are little more than hastily created rip-offs. There are far better recordings of this show out there on boots anyway (even though the performance itself is way below par), and more importantly, you can get them for free from many sources.

... the largo show almost feels like an intense dress rehearsal. are they really performing in front of an audience?

... jagger mentions bringing in "the 82nd airborne" in the stones' high wire from one of their recent greatest hits packages. wonder if 82 is a reference to the 1982 release of diver down which features a concert photo of vh opening for the stones themselves. bring in the military reinforcements -- the mighty van halen themselves!!!

... touch the largo show up with an audio remix with bob rock or mike "the phrase that pays" fraser at the controls or with nothing at all and it's ready for immediate release ...

Can't say whether or not Mick is a Van Halen fan, though they did open a few Stones shows in 81. But the song "Highwire" was 10 years after that, and the 82nd Airborne reference was literal, as the song was written about Poppy Bush's Iraq war.
