Hi everyone. I heard that Van Halen were toying with resurrecting an old song originally wrote for Van Halen II called Angel Eyes as it gives Roth's vocals more room sonically and puts more emphasis on his tone.

My source is so far removed from the Van Halen camp that she might as well be talking Russian!

So I thought I would put this on here and find out if anyone can verify it for me?

The song wasn't written for VHII, as it dates back to sometime before the band was signed. It is unclear as to whether this was a band composition or by Roth alone. Depending upon what you want to believe, Dave either played one or all of the guitars himself. Either way, the track sounds terrific considering the era (1974). This and three other songs ("Believe Me", "Simple Rhyme", "Take Your Whiskey Home") were recorded at Cherokee Studios in California, and may or may not feature original bassist Mark Stone (once again, depending upon what you want to believe).

When I first saw this pic, I couldn't help but think of what Dave said some ten years ago now, "...Ed Van Halen and his sister have wasted fucking years." Zing.

Van Halen's Rock Opera Album 2011

Having tried their hand at a rock opera in the 70's, what chance do you think the reunited Van Halen's and Roth will throw us a curve ball with a concept album or rock opera?

I certainly would whip up a lot of media interest, and with Mark Tremonti recently hearing the music without any vocals; it wouldn't have been obvious to him at all.

For those of you unaware at their past endeavours I include this, Van Halen's 'Eyes of the Night', described as 'part one of a two song rock opera about an obsessed voyeur', performed live in 1977.

This was already accomplished in 1998 with song cycle of VHIII, a heavily Pink Floyd influenced work that used the themes of The Wall as a starting point. In Van Halen's version, the story was about a megalomaniacal rock star who had become so distanced from his audience and reality in general that he commits career suicide. The tale was broken up into a series of "songs" that were written, performed and produced in such a ghastly manner as to alienate even the most hardcore members of the fan base. To further drive the Pink Floyd analogy home, Edward Van Halen sang the album's final tune himself, using an astounding recreation of Roger Water's famous "croaking as if dying" vocal style.

Unfortunately, life imitated art soon afterward, as fans rejected the album in frighteningly gigantic proportions, destroying what little credibility the guitarist had left after wrecking his band in a similar manner in 1986. A handful of fans maintain the belief that the group has one more epic album in them, and continue to hold candle lit vigils when not offering themselves mutual support on bizarre websites dedicated to the group's memory.

Hogarth: "The Band is On Fire"

                              From Ultimate Guitar:

Ross Hogarth On New Van Halen Album: 'The Band On Fire'

In UG’s continuing "Producer and Engineer" series, Ross Hogarth took time out from the studio where he is currently working on the new Van Halen album, to speak to Joe Matera about his career, his secret to capturing great guitar tones and the digital vs. analog world of recording technology.

You’re currently working with Van Halen on their new record?

The whole Van Halen record has been recorded and we’re all excited. We have just started mixing the record. I’m really stoked about it, as it is the original band, Eddie and Alex with Wolf playing bass, and David Lee Roth singing, it’s the killing side of Van Halen at the top of their game again with Diamond Dave, and the band on fire.

                                I've got a layman's question...

What's really done during the "mixing" portion ?

Is it like "pump up the bass during this section" and things like that ?
