Wouldn't mind hearing Wolfie do 'Sunday Afternoon In The Park' as a sort-of bass solo with his Uncle Al. Otherwise, I agree - bass solos make about as much sense as two basses on 'Big Bottom.'

Every single classic VH show was FLAWED because of the bass solo.
If you need to have a bass solo, which you never do, why fucking put it after the second song after they'd built up incredible momentum, just to see it all fade away? Thousands of people standing, then SITTING back down? THAT SHIT ALONE is reason why DLR is the greatest ever, having to re-rev the crowd like that.
Good riddance, fat boy!

Yeah, a bass solo is a silly concept, but back in the day, there needed to be "time-outs" for all band members to partake in an extracuricular activity or 2...or 5.Comment

Actually the drum solo came after the 2nd song. The bass solo was somewhere in the middle, except for the 1980 Invasion tour when thankfully, there was no bass solo. Both are really stupid though. At least Alex has a distinct style though unlike MA. While Alex also didn't write any of the songs, I can't imagine the albums sounding the same without him. He has a rare warmth that very few drummers had, the only other one I can think of off the top of my head was John Bonham. Anyway Van Halen II and Fair Warning especially highlight Alex's sound. Maybe they never did "Dirty Movies" in concert because Eddie can't play both lead guitar AND bass like he did on the studio version of that one.Told ya I was comin' back... Say you missed me... Say it like ya mean it!

Mike did SAITP on the VH III tour (put down your weapons!) and Big Bottom had 3 basses.Comment

I remember back in high-school, cruising around in my '76 Cutlass blasting the shit out of my Jensen speakers with VH I when all of the sudden, right at the start of Atomic Punk, a speaker blew out. The one that played Ed. I gained an aweful lot of respect and appreciation for Mike that day when I was forced to focus on just how viscious and strong his attack was. He played brutally on the money and in the pocket with just enough, but never too much showy flair. Yeah, I'm glad it was Mikey too.Comment

I love Big Al's solo's and playing. He does indeed have a Bonham flair to his playing but Al took it up a notch. Imagine if Ed had no brother and how VH would have sounded if someone like Banali or other drummers from the 70's Sunset Strip scene was palying for them. OMG!! Would not have been the same. VH needed an Alex as much as they needed a Dave and Ed. Bass player? Meh, could have been anyone really. ...But yes, glad it was Mikey.
Actually ---- one of the few bright spots from the Van Hagar years was this 3-piece jam ---- kinda wish they would do it now instead of Alex's solo:

Nice jam there. Nice to not have Hagar squawking all over it. Van Halen is the musical version of this.

Funny you should post that video. I recall reading an Ed interview from that time where by he said Sammy's lower spoken word verse vocals didn't come through well in arena sound systems, so they bagged him and did this. If only they bagged him for the rest of the show as well!! That actually is a sweet riff. Ruined by that guy they picked.Comment

Man that Alex is a monster player. DAMN!! ...But I am glad he stopped doing that build up roll thing in his solos. That kinda got old.Comment

Wow, Bose must not be all they're built up to be. I went through 2 pair of Bose ear buds already. I'm done with them.Comment
