It was just more innocent in the old days --- like this Shirley Temple film --- people saw it as cute and adorable back then --- not as a bunch of horny pedophiles on a bus about to indulge their sickest fantasies:

It seems some time a while back I read somewhere (not sure where) in a journalist's description of Dave's approach to sexual references, his lyrics were always clever and witty in context where Hagar was just a pig.

We had a suprise 40th birthday party at our house last weekend for a good friend, maybe 12-14 couples (no kids!) decided to put ADKOT on the Ipod player.I didnt go over well at all, even with the people who listen to classic rock. Not one person purchased the album, over half didnt even know DLR was back in the band, much less had been touring. There were the typical pro Sammy comments, but the one thing everyone agreed on is that Daves voice is shot. Granted the averae age here was 40-45 which puts Sammy in the band during their high school years. This was a Bon Jovi/Poison/Crue hair metal crowd I guess. The reaction killed my buzz

Too bad all your friends are lame... j/k... that's why I went to a VH concert by myself. I couldn't get anyone I know to get enthused about it, and I didn't want to just drag anyone along and have them complain or give me a bad vibe. I just made some temp friends while I was there and had a great time.

That's the problem with crowd (read: sheep) mentality... if one gets spooked, they all do. But I'm sure if you had turned them on to it individually, then you would have had some converts.

You should have gotten them "liquor-pigged" like I did to my friends, watching the Baltimore LIVE DVD from 2008.

Dave's voice shot? From cannons, maybe. I would have tossed them in the street, with all their glam crap "every Rose has a thorn" B-sides.

It's a fact ! But people still hate that Wolf was handed his spot in the band. I wasn't happy about it in 07. Thought he was too young. It didn't look right. At least this tour he looks and plays like a man. Lol. And Dave has been off on alot of songs. People bitch about bands they like all day long about shit they do, or don't do. Nothing new. You can just see more of it these days with all the different ways to bitch about life !

That's all true, but most of these trolls dont really take a side. They just type the most offensive thing possible and watch people's reactions. It's because they're shit bag TEENAGERS who are still living through the misery of being a teenager. Now with the internet we can all hear these wonderful and nuances opinions that should be kept in a high school. And since we don't know posters' real age, all this juvenile nonsense appears to be from rationale adults. But it isn't. It's just hate for hate's sake and it's taking over the world.

If someone doesn't care for what Van Halen are doing live now, or didn't like ADKOT, I've got no problem with that. It'd be nice if those opinions were expressed with a bit of thought and rationale. Ain't nothing wrong with different points of view.
I dig the band...have for years, and I didn't think every track on ADKOT was a slam dunk...didn't think Roth was in stellar form live this time around, either.
While I got no use for shit-stirring haters who have no purpose other than to say something sucks without providing reasons why, I can't say as I have much use for those who think every single, little thing Roth and Van Halen ever did was incredible.
There probably are more than a few people out there who only got into Van Halen after Roth left, and maybe they didn't like the band when Roth was in it but were attracted to the shift of direction when Sammy Hagar joined. Can't say as I necessarily understand that kind of mindset, but whatever. I mean, there were more than a few people back in the day when CVH was active who would readily agree that EVH was a fantastic guitar player but thought of Roth as a show-off clown who couldn't sing worth a shit.
I'd also be willing to bet more than a few people who saw the shows on this last tour hadn't seen Roth perform in years (I doubt everyone who went to see Van Halen this spring were diehard superfans like most of us here, and were familiar with every nuance, nook, cranny and history of the group), and what Dave brings to the stage today isn't what he was doing in all those CVH live videos people youtube.
Hey, whatthefuckever. For my money, Dave and the boys put out a record (ADKOT) they can be proud of. Eddie, Al and Wolfgang knocked it out of the park live. Dave made some vocal choices live that weren't really 100% to my liking...but you know what? When you buy a ticket to see a movie, or a concert...or whatever...there isn't a 100% guarantee that you're gonna like everything anyway. If people are bummed out that Roth isn't as physical onstage anymore as he used to be 30 years ago, or are upset that he can't scream his way through songs anymore, then that's certainly their right to piss and moan about it in whatever forum they chose to do so.
I have a sneaking suspicion that most people who whine about stuff on the internet aren't setting the world on fire with what they're doing with their lives anyway. Fuck the lot of them.

I agree, but usually they aren't, based on reviews I've read. From what I've seen, most, if not all, of the "hate" has been directed at Dave (at least live anyway). There were numerous times on the tour where people bitched about Dave's vocals at a particular show or specific songs within a show. I'd then check out what they were talking about via youtube and would often completely disagree. I'm a Dave fan (this is the Roth Army after all!), but if he had an off performance, I'm willing to acknowledge that. So yes he had patchy vocal moments in general and seemed to struggle with China Town and HAIL all tour (and like everybody else, I didn't care for the new and unimproved vocal melody on DTNA), but I thought taken as a whole, his vocals were ok.

So circling back to Terry's quote, I would've had a lot more respect for some of these reviewers if they'd just said "great show, but I would've preferred if Dave hadn't (insert whatever their Dave complaint is)" instead of hyperbole like Dave "ruined" a show. Opinions can reflect a greater reality, but in the case of a lot these reviewers, their opinions were just that- opinions (opinions that weren't shared by the thousands of people that had a great time seeing the band this tour).
