When I first heard Dave left I was shell shocked. Completely stunned. I can remember Alan Hunter on MTV came on after the "Hot For Teacher" video and said, "That was Van Halen and they are no more..." and essentially said the band broke up. But then I later found out that Dave quit. I loved Van Halen and even though I still loved Dave solo and bought all his releases, for years I carried a certain level of anger at him for leaving. I still do at times when I think of what could've been and the music we all lost out on for two decades.

I'd say 1984 was the biggest tour CVH ever did from a production and commercial standpoint, but a lot of the rough-and-tumble and ragged rock fury of the earlier tours was kind of gone by the time 1984 rolled around.

Also, one thing that stood out at the time on the 1984 tour was how the entire band was onstage for maybe three or four tunes at a time, then Mike would take a bass solo, then another few tunes, then a drum solo, then another few tunes, then an extended Dave rap, then another few tunes, then a guitar solo. Like, people were actually yelling during all these solo breaks "play some fucking tunes!" It was kind of like a live strategy leftover from some of the more indulgent prog rock bands of the 1970s, particularly when contrasted with other bands I saw during that period like Iron Maiden on the Powerslave tour the following year: I mean, Maiden just served up one tune after another. Bam! There's one song. Bam! There's another. Bam! Bam! Bam! Bam!

I suppose it could've been worse- Ed could've noodled around on keyboards for 25-30 minutes! God bless Mike and Al, but I would've preferred to listen to a couple of extra tunes. I remember reading a review of a show during the Sam era and the reviewer described the Al/Mike solos as "time-wasting anachronisms". Ouch.

Were Dave's raps that frequent/bad on the '84 tour? I have a couple of boots from that tour and I don't remember Dave's raps being particularly lengthy or frequent. Of course I haven't listened to those in years, so maybe it's more a function of that.

For some shows in that tour, "Everybody Wants Some!!" could go 15 minutes or longer. 10 of those minutes was Dave rapping with the same BS story about Alex getting some. Dave also did a 2-3 minute rap early in the show between RWTD and Little Guitars.

Here's a copy of a text file I made up some time ago for a bootleg of the May 17, 1984 show in Phoenix, AZ. Just take a look at the times:

              Disc 1
              Total Time: 45:15

              1. Unchained 4:40
              2. Hot For Teacher 4:05
              3. Drum Solo 2:55
              4. On Fire 3:10
              5. Runnin' With The Devil 3:10
              6. Dave Raps 3:00
              7. Little Guitars 4:50
              8. Cathedral 2:00
              9. House Of Pain 4:10
              10. Bass Solo 4:40
              11. Jamie's Cryin' 3:30
              12. I'll Wait 5:05

              Disc 2
              Total Time: 69:01

              1. Keyboard Solo / Everybody Wants Some!! 19:20
              2. Girl Gone Bad 5:10
              3. 1984 / Jump 5:40
              4. Guitar Solo 13:00
              5. (Oh) Pretty Woman 3:03
              6. Panama 7:00
              7. You Really Got Me 9:00
              8. Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love 6:46

So that was a roughly 115 minute show. By my count, the drum solo, Dave's first rap, the bass solo, the keyboard solo/Dave's tai-chi moves, EWS and the guitar solo were 43 minutes of it. The last three songs took 23 minutes to perform between extending the songs and crowd noise in between the songs. So that's well over one hour of the show, well over half the show, where only four actual songs can be found in that time.

By the way, on one of the Detroit 4/5/84 recordings, when Dave said something like, "You people are the rock and roll crazies of the world," the taper exclaimed right into the microphone, "Fuck you, that's what you said in New York last night!" Probably the most hilarious thing I've ever heard on ANY bootleg. There are other bootlegs where Dave is taking his time during Ice Cream Man or whatever and you can hear people screaming to just "play the fucking song."

Yeah, not exactly great time management there! The boots I have from that tour are Charlotte and Indianapolis. I remember a couple of raps from those. In one of them (don't remember which one) Dave raps about Al finding himself a "skinny woman" and making a stampeding elephant amount of noise all night long with the woman. He riffed off of that for a bit. The other rap I remember is Dave talking about being in some diner/restaurant and being hassled by the waitress, which ended with: "Mr Roth, if i was your girlfriend, i'd put poison in your drink." With Dave replying: "And if you were my girlfriend, i'd damn well drink it too!"

Those were the only extended raps I can remember from those tapes. Seems like the Al one went on for a bit. Knowing Dave, it wouldn't surprise me if the waitress from his one story was named Evelyn- she seems to gets around!

Time management wasn't invented in 1984... even if it had been the Mighty VH wasn't managing time... they were making it!!

That line from Dave is a direct "steal" from Winston Churchill; except "Winnie" was saying it to a woman who hated his politics. I wonder if Winston Churchill ever quoted DLR?

You are right Nigel, Dave´s words are from Winston Churchill !!!!!

                            "fans" and haters on youtube

This rant is a long time coming.

                            I. Am. DONE.
                            I'm FUCKING done.

To everyone who comments on VH videos on youtube, I don't know what to say to you guys anymore. As a proud Classic Van Halen and Classic Van Halen Reborn fan, It hurts. It hurts me a lot to see Van Halen fans constantly attacking Dave, attacking each other. Right now, theres a debate going on on whether or whether not Eddie should fire Dave because "he sucks" And frankly, right now. I'm too pissed off and upset to even have an opinion.

The same people...that BEGGED in 2004 for Eddie to get Dave back into the band, the same people that BEGGED in 2008 for a new album. Now, the new album is out, VH is on the road again, and NOW WHAT?! There are tons of hate channels on Youtube, and not only that. People who claim to be ex-fans of Van Halen. Why the fuck are you doing this to them, they bust their ass, working day and night for TWO YEARS STRAIGHT. To give you the best VH album since Fair Warning and to embark on one of the best rock tours of the 21st century, and what do they get in return?

                            "Gawd Roth sucks."
"Ha ha ha , 1:18 Roth-looser forgets the text and fails!
This is a shame! Wolfgang sucks on bass, Roth can't sing anymore .....
Once my favorite band, now nothing but some oldfarted grandpas "
"Anyone who thinks DLR is a better VH frontman than Sammy needs to go and get treatment, can he actually sing????"
"The difference is my ears actually WORK! If you think Dave sounds good live now then you are truly delusional & need to schedule a hearing exam soon. He's had months to work it out & still sounds awful...time to let go of the 80s & embrace reality."

This is what Dave gets in return? Hell to the FUCK NO.

And when I defend the band, using facts and logic, I get insulted on my channel, and not because I'm "delusional" or "wrong" It's because "fans" think I'm an asshole for calling them idiots. And you know what, if your saying something idiotic like "fuck Dave, where's Sammy?" I'm gonna call you an idiot.

It's just...I can't deal with it anymore. I feel like that I'm the only one that has faith in Van Halen anymore.

There are a million bands and singers who have ONE half assed listenable song.

There are a 100,000 bands or singers who have ONE really good song.

There are 1000 bands or singers who have a listenable whole album with maybe one good song the album is built around.

There are 100 bands or singers who have 2 listenable albums with some good songs on them.

There are 10 bands or singers that everything they have written or performed, I find exceptional.

There are 5 bands or singers that are the most eceptionally excellent examples of thier art form.

CVH, is one of those five as far as I am concerned.

So, as you can see I am a musical bigot. I like 5 bands or singers, and there a 100 bands that I can find interesting for a while, and there are MILLIONS of bands that I think SUCK!!!!

So, fuck those people,.. they more than likely listening to music that sucks.. so it is a 5 in a million chance, SURE BET!!, that they're musical prefferences suck, ( completely different than mine).

EDIT: I reserve the right to change the numbers of the bands that suck, as to wether, I am drunk, stoned ,pilled up, or fucking the neighbor lady, sometimes I bend a little.
