Well, I haven't read every single post here...but enough to have seen the raging debate about the performance, the sound quality, Dave's voice, etc...
Y'know...all the typical shit that gets sliced and diced around here after a VH show.
I've also watched some of the YouTube stuff, which swings wildly in quality based on the person's location in the venue and how good their device is. I don't know how anybody could make a solid judgement about audio quality based on video shot from a phone...but I digress....
Overall, I think what we saw in Sydney is simply what Van Halen IS these days. Dave's voice was better than it was on the last 'full' tour, but he's gotta stop reaching so high. I think that their performance may have been affected by all of the shit they had to deal with related to the promoters and the venue. From all accounts it was a very disorganized affair and I think the band felt rushed and somewhat out of sorts.
And...don't shoot me...but I think that subconsciously some of our criticism may come from being burned out on the same "greatest hits" setlist that they've been recycling since 2008. I know they threw in some new stuff in the show, but they really need to mix up the setlist. Granted, this was the first time back in Australia in a long time and I know those fans wanted to hear it, but stateside I think that they have to go deeper into the catalog the next time around, or focus on new shit much more. I love ADKOT....I've worn it out!!! I want to hear more of it LIVE! I want them back in the studio cranking out even more!!
They've fucked around with "Top Jimmy", "Drop Dead Legs" and others. It's time to stop nibbling around the edges of those GREAT SONGS and take a BIG FUCKING BITE ALREADY!
They need to reach a point where they say to themselves "OK...we've done our due diligence with satisfying the masses over the last 5 years with the super hits....let's say a big THANKS to the hardcore gang and mix it the fuck up!!"
