I haven't checked on that Jump clip but most likely they forgot to tune the synth down a step.

Holy moly it must be a full moon today. Attitude from many a corner.

I was just referring to that clip to round out a point about various turnings employed throughout their shows. Top Jimmy wouldn't necessarily have to be avoided just because of its tuning. Truly sorry I brought it up and I hope everyone has a pleasant evening.

Another one of those classic genius posts, sure to generate responses. You log on the next day to see what your witty gem has produced to find no one gets it and 2 knotheads want to stick their dicks in it... Well played, sir!!

No, we just want Dave to sing it better than we do in the car.

That sums it up for me... Hey, Dave nailed EWS. It's not like he CAN'T sing DTNA right if he TRIES!

The whole show didn't suck from the vids I saw but what sucked really sucked.
You're gonna hear the angels sing...

Maybe it was a little below par, maybe it wasn't. I don't care because I wasn't there and if/when VH tour maybe some of the shows will be better than others. I hope I get to see a good one again but I bet I would have a better time at the worst fucking Van Halen show ever than I would watching the best one ever recorded on someone's iPhone on my laptop.

Hey I didn't mean to address that to you as such it's just the thread itself was getting silly with it's negativity.

A couple of things to make my point.

YoTube reviews of Van Halen at their peak in the early 80s

                    1) "Fucking hell Dave was off tonight, seemed more preoccupied with dancing and showing off than hitting the notes. A lot of the time he wasn't even singing in the verses he needs to stop partying so much."

                    2) "Ok that's fucking 30 gigs from this tour and still the same set! WTF? Even worse yet another fucking Mike Anthony bass solo. Why do they think we would want to watch this every night on YouTube? Fuck You Van Halen."

                    3) "Fucking Roth again 40 gigs into the tour and he's still doing that tired old shtick. I saw them on the first night of the tour and it was great but watching it every night on YouTube I'm sick of it. I thought he had made it all up in the moment, turns out it's like a fucking script!!!!"

                    4) "I've watched that clip again and there is no way they parachuted into the stadium. If you watch closely on YouTube you can see the switch. What a load of shit!"

Secondly back to the experience. In the last year I've video'd every gig I've played and it's been useful to cast a critical eye over it and work out ways to improve BUT I'm lucky enough that I don't have to let anyone else see these videos. I know now how far perception is from reality, I can play like shit and one the night everyone says it was the best I've ever done and vice versa.

Analyzing a live rock show on the internet is like trying to interpret a post on the forum here. You are only getting half the information to your senses that you would get if you were there in the room with the person getting the full vibe, it's a false experience.

We should put all of us in the same room together and put that on YouTube.

I don't often get worked up on this forum, but there's something worth saying - despite everyone giving Elvis a hard time on this, he is pretty much right on this, in my view.

In repect of this Australian gig, and the set list in particular, Van Halen don't have a fucking "greatest hit"' in Australia that a random, anonymous, festival-going audience of non-serious fans might expect to hear. So why play "the greatest hits"??

And ... why play crud like 'Pretty Woman'?? Man, it bugs the fucking hell out of me that this song gets precedence over so-called 'deep cuts'. What about Best Fucking Cuts, eh, fellas??

And c'mon, the only people in that audience who knew something like 'Pretty Woman' was a Van Halen tune are the die-hard fans. Within the context of Diver Down, yeah, I like it fine, I can take it - but let's face it, compared to Roy Orbison's original it's never gonna be the best version.

So, the position they were in Australia was that they were playing to an audience, basically, for whom the only real hit is probably "Jump". So - why not play "Mean Street" or "Drop Dead Legs", or numerous others? All your killer - 'let's swat Aerosmith' - tunes? Well, if it was a 'warm up' gig for Japan, why not test some new stuf?

The idea that they can just keep rolling out the same tired setlist is bullshit. Who's gonna keep buying into that?

I love VH, I do, really and totally - Dave to the Grave, etc - but I am sorry to say I think they are the most fucking unadventurous band I can think of in rock history. And ... when you consider the talent involved in this outfit, it is extremely disappointing.

The fans have to say to be able to say "hey, we really do love you - but c'mon to fuck ... and serve your fans. We are ALL there is." What was this great Aussie audience that were gonna be deprived of the so-called 'hits'? Those 15,000-20,000 people in a 90,000 seat stadium!!

So, I gotta say fuck all this "the greatest hits is to be expected because it is a festival", etc.

                        Bullshit.

The festival audience don't know squat. There are no hits. It is not North America. Play "One Foot Out the Door", or summat, ya lazy fuckers. The passing audience - there for a day out - don't know any better, but at least the FANS who are there will get it ... and the casual fans ... well, they might get to hear some of those killer tunes for the first time, and not think that Kings of Chaos were better.

This is my band, it is your band. I have invested more than 30 of my 48 years on this planet following, defending, and celebrating them. And yet ... they keep continuing to diminish their own great legacy. Well, all I can say is that we, the fans, determine the ultimate fate of the legacy.

You might not really get that, Dave and Eddie and Alex - but without an audience you do not exist. That is a fact.

Stop fucking it up you lazy cunts.

Here's one possibility none of the so-called "experts" in this thread have considered, or at least I haven't seen it:

Preface - myself and a couple of other people have remarked how (even though he's pitchy on a couple of tunes) Dave's voice had more power and control than he had on some dates on the 2012 tour... has anyone ever heard him hold & ad-lib a note as long as he did on that show's version of "Romeo Delight" at the end? That was not the hallmark of a dude having power or breath-control issues. Whether you're happy with that particular performance or not, clearly Dave's gettin' his groove back, so to speak...

So, hmm... how could a singer retain/regain power and yet still at points go off the ranch pitch-wise? Gee, anybody consider maybe, just maybe... the monitor mix was shit (festival gig, can't say it enough times) and he couldn't hear himself and Ed? Sounds at points to me at least, like that's the reason why he's straining... How many times did Dave ask them to turn the guitar up? Obviously there were monitor problems. You can't fault them for that.

And no, I'm not making excuses for the band, but it bears mentioning - and some of the people leveling the harshest criticism here also sound the most clueless... notably the "they did this, they did that" shit (farting in ELBOW's general direction here) like you were there, and know what went down? STFU.
