Mike: It's 'Flattering' To Know DLR Wants Him Back In VH

Blabbermouth.net focuses on the latest heavy metal and hard rock news, reviews and music featuring tour dates and release dates

Former VAN HALEN and current CHICKENFOOT bassist Michael Anthony was a guest on yesterday's (Monday, April 8) edition of Eddie Trunk's SiriusXM satellite radio show, "Eddie Trunk Live". The two discussed the passing of Andy Johns, working with the legendary engineer and producer, hot sauce, David Lee Roth and all sorts of things in between. You can now listen to the chat using the audio player below (courtesy of Michael Anthony's official web site).

Asked about VAN HALEN singer David Lee Roth's recent interview with Rolling Stone magazine in which he said he wanted Anthony back in the band, the bassist said: "It was flattering to hear Dave talk like that. He never used to talk like that when we were all playing together. [laughs] But hey… I really don't know what to say to that. It was flattering that he said that. And, obviously, I'm the kind of guy that… water under the bridge. I don't hold any kind of grudges for anything, and you never know what will happen at anytime…. At this point in your life and career and whatever, the career aside, it's more about the friendship and just people. And if the music side of it, if that happens, if that comes about, all the better, but that's not what it's really about at this point."

During the Rolling Stone interview, Roth touched upon the touchy subject of Anthony replacing current bassist — and Eddie Van Halen's son — Wolfgang Van Halen, from here on out. "But Ed has his own vision, I'm assuming," Roth said. "We haven't really been able to speak about it and it's a disappointment, just as not having a chance for a reunion of the original band. Clearly, vocals are every bit as much a component of success as a rhythm section or a guitar solo. . . what we have at our fingertips is arguably one of the greatest high tenor voices ever — that was in Michael Anthony. In our tiny little corner of the universe, that voice is as identifiable as the high voice in EARTH, WIND & FIRE, as identifiable as the high voice in the BEACH BOYS. VAN HALEN is an indelicate house blend of both — that's intentionally."

Anthony said in a 2010 interview that Eddie and Alex Van Halen hold a grudge against him for maintaining a friendship with Sammy Hagar. Anthony recalled to Mojo, that the problems started between him and the band when in the late '90s, VAN HALEN once again tried unsuccessfully to bring David Lee Roth back into the fold. With VAN HALEN seemingly on hiatus, Hagar had called Anthony to see if he was interested in hooking up with him and Neal Schon in their side project PLANET US.

Anthony explained, "Some VAN HALEN fans say I left the band to hook up with Sammy, but I never said, 'I quit.' There was nothing going on in the VAN HALEN camp, but Eddie kinda backed me up against a wall. . . Eddie felt that I was a traitor. I helped hook Sammy back up with them for the 2004 reunion tour, but Eddie didn't want me to be a part of that originally, so I took a big pay cut. I'm not crying, I didn't need the money. I did that because I wanted to play for the fans. I signed away any legal rights I had with the name, the trademark or whatever. I did it because if that was the last time VAN HALEN would ever be on stage, I wanted to be part of it."

He went on to say, "The major reason why I'm not in VAN HALEN (now) is because I became friends with Sammy again. The Van Halen brothers never got over that. If they hold a grudge, they hold it forever."

Odd, as per usual. For one, I never heard anything implying Mike was a co-architect of the '04 thing. Always heard that started with a Sammy/Alex phone conversation. Second, I can think of a grudge the Van Halen's dropped in recent times. It's the reason we have any VH with Dave at all as we speak.

I never knew mike was such a big part of getting 04 up and running .

The biggest stumbling block for a full reunion in my opinion ain't the grudge , time and money smooth grudges .
It's the fact as long as Wolfe wants to play band with pops that's what's gonna happen.
If Wolfe decides at some point I liked playing with other people and the tour he did with the other band . Or Decides fuck dad am gonna do my songs or some shit ... Then who knows .
      fuck your fucking framing

        I would agree...

And I'll bet my bile duct that if/when Mike ever comes back, it will be only after Wolf tells Dad to make it happen....

Seems to me that if VH wants to guarantee selling out arenas on another tour they would include Michael Anthony in some capacity, even if it's just a guest spot on a few numbers. I would have no problem seeing 5 of them up there if Wolf played keyboards or whatever.
My karma just ran over your dogma.

Wolf will probably leave if he's involved in a side-project that takes off.

And this is bad why, exactly? Because hard rock pioneers shouldn't play elevator music and Ronald is gonna put out the same interview every six months. He treated me bad but call me. Did you know Hagar wrote the song Call Me Maybe?

They obviously shouldn't hold a grudge against Mike if that's what's going on, I just don't want Hags anywhere near them musically.

That's probably the only way they'll get my money again...

That or if Dave get's his vocals polished up again...

I'm not shelling out hunderds, if not thousands of dollars on sub-par bullshit...again...

Thank you & thank you. Both points I was going to make. So now would be a terrific time for Michael to say something flattering about Dave....for once.

Dear lawd!! What did you spend this last time around? I got 2 decent floor seats for $300 and change total. Which, yeah, I probably won't do again either.

It's the when, not the if that bothers me. By that time, Wolf will be as bald as a cue ball, and the band would be in their 80s, leading to the following two results.

                          First...

Followed by the second, less than thrilled result...

Sobolewski is probably the only card EVH has left up his sleeve. Sure as hell better not be Hagarita!

I don't see Dave's voice magically getting better with time, and even if he improves back to 2007-08 form then I doubt it will make any impact on ticket sales.

So what do you do if VH concerts start drawing less than 8-9,000 people? FULL ORIGINAL VAN HALEN LINEUP. It's a no-brainer.

Wolf can play "backup bass" if he's still interested in a paycheck from Daddy. As long as they have the original 4 onstage, that's all that matters.
