Watch this...
Wake the fuck up, DAVE !!
Well, judging this little piece harshly as was asked of us, it's bad, really bad. This is pretty much Dave's baseline. Easy tune, still has some room in it to scat around a bit, but he just chokes it. The part when he put the top hat with the yellow stripe on and pranced around-- he puts more effort into feeling pretty by playing dress up which he does several times during the show. Still ruins Unchained too. Remember in 96 at MTV when Dave said to Ed " tonight's about me". I think that's what he thinks whnever he walks on stage. If they ever look thru the supposed vaults I think theyre gonna find a bunch of concerts where the band is well oiled and firing on all cylinders and Dave skipping around sing/talking the words, forgetting some others (that never gets stale) changing into various sparkly housecoats and eating up the applause!!!!!!

I have an extensive bootleg collection that proves "Dave skipping around sing/talking the words" to be an inaccurate assessment. But, continue to have your fun.Comment

Dave has been doing it forever ! He just sang a little better then. People that ever thought Dave was a great singer live are fucking dreaming ! He did o.k. in the early years (about 78 to 81) and the first reunion tour. But I have some shit before the band was signed and Dave sounded strained and skipped words ! So at the Roth Army it just makes me laugh. Mostly because people want him jumping off the drum riser and doing back flips ! Sure he has been struggling since last year. I guess they should just pack it in. I wonder if people would be bitching if Mike was still around and Dave was singing like this ? Wolf can sing o.k. but HE IS NOT Mike ! Mike covered a lot for Dave in the old days. Even when Dave was singing right along with him. Wolf has power but can't do that for Dave. Not from what I have seen on boots. He doesn't even try. Mike always did.Last edited by 78/84 guy; 07-31-2013, 07:52 PM.Comment

OK, the guy's not a natural born singer, but make no mistake, his efforts early on were pretty damn impressive in my opinion. Check out VH's version of ZZ Top's Brown Sugar from '75. He's kicking ass all over that. Those were his vocal formative years. They did a lot of cover tunes that didn't fit well with his pipes like Sweet Emotion, but he was tight on their originals.Comment

He did his job early on. I have a 74 boot that opens with Chevrolet by ZZ & he is hit or miss. Depends on the song. And some others from 76 or 77 with originals that are the same way. But for me the best thing he is recorded on live is the 78 Hammersmith show. 6/1/78. That should be released by the band as a bonus with the first album. Just killer stuff. I know there are other shows that are good like Japan, but this one sounds the best to me. That is Van Halen taking names and eating up 70's rock bands ! But even on that you can tell Dave was just better in the studio. I do LOVE Baltimore 3/15/08. Ed was playing good again and Dave was on the money all night. They bust into Crossroads. Stellar stuff ! Maybe his voice will come back, maybe it won't. He's almost 60 ! I will give him a little room. When he sounds bad on everything live then he might want to hang it up.Comment

I've got that '74 show. Dave's clearly just finding his voice. That's not a performance to judge, though I thought he did fine for a 19 year old baritone, especially on We All Had A Real Good Time.
As far as Dave being better in the studio goes, he didn't have to put on a show there and he could do numerous takes and paste together the best ones. Essentially, everyone performs better vocally in the studio rather than live for those two reasons me thinks.Comment

Paul Rodgers had pipes? Hmm. Perhaps i'll have to give him another listen some day. I always thought that guy sang like his jaw was wired shut. Freddie on the other hand was immense.
Hey, where the F is everybody? Not that it isn't fun talkin' to you 78, but I get the feeling the slow news season is upon us. Folks either went into hiding or are beating the shit out of each other in 2 or 3 other threads.Comment
