The Van Halen brand might even rank with the top brands like Zep, The Stones and The Who. As much as I dislike them The Beatles would still be on top. If you really think about it Van Halen had a lot to do with the popularity of hair bands. They didn't wear enough make up to elevate the status of glam bands but they had plenty of hair. I think Dave was a big Jim Dandy fan. So was Jesse James Dupree. Jesse got a littler closer to looking like him in the hair dept but Dave got his moves down and took it to another level.
They could have at least changed their name to Van Haggar to preserve SOME of the mystique during the off years while Ed was running his sideshow. As big of a VH fan as I am, I'll be the first admit that no other band ruined their credibility worse than Van Halen. Thank god for ADKOT.

Some may argue that Deep Purple and Sabbath tarnished theirs with the constant line up changes and some weak albums, though i can't think of any individual members of those bands who were as shameful as Haggis.

If they'd have stuck with Mammoth I'd agree but Van Halen is Ed and Alex's last name so they had every right to keep using it whether we liked it or not. Dave should have never suggested using it in the first place. If he could do it over he'd probably suggest another name like Roth.

Well.... "former Black Sabbath singer" Jeff Fenholt probably comes pretty close......

Of course the only thing he ever actually recorded was demos for what was then considered a Tony Iommi solo album (and in reality remains so, despite what Warner Brothers put on the label) and never played a single gig with Iommi, let alone the actual Black Sabbath. But that doesn't stop him from whoring himself as a former Black Sabbath frontman on fundagelical TV networks.

File this in the 'what-if' bin.. But somewhere in a parallel universe VH ended in 1985 and an other band featuring 3/4 of VH and some douchebag started up. They enjoyed marginal success at first from curiosity then faded away into the pack of generic schlock-rock bands of the late 80's. The good news is they got Dave back around 96 and dominated for the next 10 years or so.

I definitely agree. I really think that the band should have been named Van Hagar because any half-wit can tell that if you play Unchained and follow it up with fucking Can't Stop Loving You, they can tell that its EVH playing but it sounds like two COMPLETLEY different bands.

A friend of my son's (plays guitar) says EVH is overrated because there is no soul....

My response "The fucking guy can't read a lick of sheet music - That's ALL he has is soul !!"

Now, if you want to talk about originality, you might have a case there...

After all, he's played basically the same exact guitar solo for 30 years now, outside of a very subtle change every now and then....

Yeah, the originality spans from when he first picked up the guitar to 1981, with a few hot moments afterwards, like the flip up guitar on the '84 tour. Not there's anything wrong with that. During the Hagar administration, he discovered the neck pick up and Wah pedal and started morphing into Clapton a bit.

You know what? That was a crappy thread I started. Good Memory. Kinda creepy you remembered it, but after reading it I'm thankful i've only posted 115 times in 5 years. If Eddie had died after Fair Warning he would be held in the same regard as Jimi and Randy. I saw DLR play before 300 people 10 years removed from VH in a club on Long Island promoting YFLM. Eddie overated? Not in my eyes.

Dave donated the proceeds from that Thermo Plastic Chair song to Hurricane Sandy.

Sounds like your son's pal isn't that good technically.

The 'no soul' argument is the refuge of those people, more often used against Vai and it's like saying Bach had no soul.

There are many guitarists with no feel or no melody and I consider that a weakness although the whole thing is subjective.

The 'no soul' thing though is bullshit. It's criticizing without being able to define what you don't like. It would be better if he just said 'I don't like that style of guitar' rather than trying to cover his inability to express his opinions some fake weight by using a stupid term like 'soul'.

Feel free to quote me on that to him...
