40 year old 1/4 inch tape? That stuff was expensive, when you did a demo you would have to pay a tape charge based on how much you used and it took up space. Over the years stuff would get taped over deliberately or by mistake or just plain lost.

Happened to me when I went back looking for stuff from a studio in the 90s 10 years on never mind 40.
Sure, things get lost. You are spot on.

But ... weren't WB working on putting something from those tapes out around 2000/02, when the golden goose had stopped dropping platinum discs, and Ed and Al nixed it cos they hated what they heard when they listened to it?

OK, that's over ten years ago, but if the tape was around then, it should be easier to figure out what might have happened to it.

They were recorded long before they signed with WB.
I think it's the original mid-77 demo EVH was referring to. They went in and cut something like 28 tunes in a few hours (according to something Donn Landee said in an interview a few years back).

WB own that, no doubt in my mind.

Sooo does all this lost demo thing mean that the 10 albums worth of material are history too?

New EVH interview (Washington Post, April 2nd)

In 77, they demoed tunes at a studio in Malibu that belonged to Donn Landee's friend, Dennis Dragon.

A reliable witness (in my view), LA music historian, Harvey Kubernick, a friend of Dragon's, said he was present and saw VH demo '(Oh) Pretty Woman' ... in 1977, with Dragon engineering the session.

Due to the Landee connection, my guess is that this was the WB demo, laid down soon after they were signed.

All we do know about that is that from those 100 songs the top three included 'Up For Breakfast'.

                            What's that supposed to mean...

Mikey is the one with the wherewithal to have saved the stuff...

If you had been to a studio before or weren't mentally ill you would know that you can't make an album from a cassette tape.
