Well, I will say The Who had a few good years between 1998 and 2002 when Starkey was in the band and Entwistle was still alive. Easily among the best stuff they did live post-Moon outside of the first couple of years Jones was with the band (which I thought were pretty good - for some reason, Jones never really worked well with the band in terms of recording and the first Farewell Tour [the last full tour with Jones] Jones was playing very wooden and stiff, but the first couple of years with the band I thought Jones was quite good live).

The Van Halens are servicing the CVH material well live, but Dave just isn't. He hasn't been for 4 years now. At this point, if Roth quits and Hagar rejoins, it's not gonna be some huge loss because Dave isn't up to the task of fronting Van Halen in a manner that sounds halfway decent anymore. And once Roth is out of the band, who cares if Hagar is singing...or Cherone...or Joe Jonas...or the exhumed corpse of Tiny Tim, for that matter?

Oh, absolutely, The Who at the New York 9/11 show with Starkey on drums were outstanding, and the stripped down, garage-band tours were wonderful, as well. The thing is, nothing was propelled forward.

I guess we need to stop having expectations of artists as they mature, much like we do with sports stars. All in all, we are all equably infallible to the depletion of age.

If he can't get the job done live while surrounded by the Van Halens, throwing him onstage with Vai/Sheehan or John 5 isn't gonna make his rapidly waning abilities sound any better.

You just get to the point where it's not worth making exceptions to your level of performance expectations for the guy. He isn't mobile onstage anymore, he can't scream anymore...yeah, okay, I guess...for the past few years, he can't even be bothered to sing anymore.

So now it's basically Dave walking around onstage yelling off-key? Fuck it, I'm done with him. Thanks for all those great years and all the great music, & c ya!

It would matter if those Van Hag rumors were true, anyway. It's deeply sad that the 2012-13 tour was so disappointing Dave-wise while the Van Halens delivered like hell, for sure. Dave didn't bother leveling up, which is ununderstandable as he'd been willing to reunite for so long. The 2007-08 tour was fucking awesome on his behalf, that said. The last tour was all the more so disappointing.

There's one thing that's positive at least, for all the hardcore Michael Anthony lovers if those rumors are true, they'll be able to get as much EEEEEEEEEEEEE as they've been longing for for so long.

Actually...that's my ultimate dream: Wolfie singing and three other stupid fuck young video game player friends of his rounding out the band and using the Van Halen name.
