Originally posted by ZahZoo I don't know guys I think you are putting too much stock into the liner notes... Nobody buys an album for the liner notes/pictures (I know the guy borrowed a copy). To me that's like saying you buy Playboy for the articles... yeah right.
The history section in the notes covers the original era nicely but reads like it was written for someone who's lived under a rock the last 30 years... but then again this thing wasn't packaged for the die-hard fan cause we all own multiple copies of most of the stuff.
The music stands on it's own... well every other cut that is...
Man, you kiss a lot of ass, I have to say.
Seriously, those liner notes are a crock. It pisses me off that a bunch of (or some) new, uneducated young people may be picking this CD, looking through the liner notes and have practically no idea who David Lee Roth was or why the band was so special then. It makes me sick to see the sisters getting ALL the credit for a legacy that would have never even gotten off the ground were it not for David Lee.

Dude...it's more than liner notes. Come on.....we're the LP generation. Remember albums? Those are the same people that buy VH records. We love the visuals and that's the best part of buying old material because we can easily download it....or better yet...we've already got the old stuff!
They could have put a visual retrospective of the band. Perhaps a picture of the Dave VanHalen and another with VanHagar. That's it...a tribute to both version of VH. And then from that point on, the music would have done the talking. But to exclude Dave and put live Dave tracks with Sammy on them is blasphemy!!!! Total Blasphemy! That's an insult to the classic line up and to all the fans of that line up.
We're not being petty, we're being just! Sure...there's tribute to Eddie's old guitar, but not anything else. He's a self centered old man. Sad. Very sad. He speaks of "Lead singers disease"....he sure has "Lead Guitarists disease". No doubt!

Originally posted by Warham The fact that they included three Roth songs sung by Hagar at a concert is a disgrace on a greatest hits album (let alone, any album).
The only good thing about that is that younger fans will hear those three songs on the CD both in the original studio versions and the re-sung Hagar versions and be able to easily say, "Wow, Roth sounds so much better!":D Those live versions suck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dude...it's blasphemy and it's unforgivable. So they can count me OUT as a fan. Guess what...I'm popping in some Judas Priest baby....no more VH for me! Atleast until the anger wears out.....LOL

Yeah I know... I even go back to 78's and 45's generation. Sure artwork was/is an engrained element in music for our age group... but to me the driving force is the music.
The only packaging elements in the thing are the current lineup and the complimentary write-up. A picture of Dave isn't going to generate one more sales than it prevents. The most important historical part of the original era of VH was the music... what they looked like was secondary. So who gives a shit about a picture from 78-85?
To me... being pissed about it all is wasted energy. If it's important to you... so be it. Git er done!!

BTW - Re-recording the oldies is not an impossibility. Axel Rose had his new band re-record all the original catalog. He was going to release it, but the label said "hell no!".
when they made the movie "black hawk down" they wanted to use "welcome to the jungle". Axel said sure, but use the new version that was re-recorded. The movie people said "no" so the movie was not put on the movie. So Axel...you and Ed ought to hang out.

ZahZoo - sure, a picture would not have cured our anger, but ....at least it acknowleges the classic line up whom we dearly loved and the one that made the band happened originally. If there wasn't a DLR...there wouldn't be a Sammy Hagar Van Halen.
I think the CD was a celebration of 25 years of music (or more)....so use it to your advantage. Ofcourse Ed only wants to see forward that's why he didn't put old pictures.....but then..why did he release a "best of"? He's confused.

They're trying to pretend Dave never existed...that it was some weird blonde stranger in the studio with them singing these early songs, just keeping the microphone warm until the "great" Sammy Hagar showed up.

True that liner notes aren't going to effect sales either direction, it's just another slap in the face. The TV commercial I saw is not much better. You never see Dave singing, you see him jump around a little in the background, and you see Ed & Mike singing the chorus of the old songs.
At least we pretty much have conclusive proof that Sammy doesn't sell tickets or records anymore. At least we finally know that when people think of the singer of Van Halen, they think of David Lee Roth. There hasn't been one review of this tour that hasn't felt the need to acknowledge that this isn't the original band Van Halen.

Well maybe Rikk... but my gut suspects that maybe they acknowledge Dave existed by the song selection and that after 20 years apart it just ain't that big a deal for a picture.
We've had the last 20 years to develop our psychosis over Dave possibly returning to the band... they've spent the last 20 years living a whole different life with another guy on the mic. To me including the pic of Dave is like expecting someone to include a pic of your ex-wife 20 years later in a Christmas card just cause she gave birth to the children (music) involved...
