i spent more time with the babysitter, maria, who is from the azores, and if she is still alive, likely still lives there, and her family than i did my own.
she has a son about my age, i wish i could remember his name, but for the life of me, i cannot.

maria spoke no english, and as such, i was under her care for the time i was an infant, until i started kindergarten when i was 5 in the fall of 1982.

so i learned portugese first, because that is the language that was spoken
around me most until i started school.
i was fluent.

now i cannot speak a word of it, and i think it is such a shame my father went to such great legnths to ensure that i would forget it altogether.

all i remember is that i always thought it was a very beautiful and elegant language.
i loved it.

english on the other hand, i do not care for.
i hate it.
i've always felt it was a shit language.
but it is what i am stuck with.

so be it.

when i started school, the other kids beat me up a lot and threw rocks at me, and generally make my life terribly unpleasant, and even the teachers treated me horribly because i didn't speak english.
they used to steal my lunch, or they just smeared it all over my overalls and my face..........
i still have nightmares about it.

Oh, I dunno...your story (for one reason or another) seems more credible. Let's review: Came to this country on the Titanic in steerage, hooked up with another man's fiance, survived ship sinking by floating on bicycle debris. Went to work in Hollywood as Barney Fife, shot guy in foot. Got on yet another boat, and survived that one sinking as well. Had affair with Mary Ann, then fled to Michigan amongst pregnancy rumors. Learned drums, then headed west to remake your fortune.
