that said, here's the equal protection argument:

the state creates a law that grants specific rights to 2 consenting adults. there is no valid, legal reason why those rights would be denied 2 otherwise qualifed people because they are the same sex. tradition doesn't count as valid. slavery was tradition. tradition, by itself, isn't enough. nor does the fact that some religions, but not all, consider it immoral. nor does the fact that some people find it icky.

the fact is, you don't have to like anna nicole marrying some 197 year old dude. and you don't have to like britney getting married for 42 seconds. but you've got to have a valid reason to treat people differently. and in the case of civil marriage, gender isn't one of them.

I do not want any religion being the official religion of my country. And since religion wants to tell fellow citizens that they do not "belong" (stock and trade of religions ugly face) I prefer to live in a secular society that is going forward.
