Ours here in SK is covered by income and sales tax. Some provinces charge premiums though. Each province is responsible for their own program, and they get transfer payments from the feds.

Unfortunately, when times are tough, government cutbacks often nail health care first. It was really bad in the late 80's when I got my 1st pacer. My cardiologist left Canada because he almost lost a 27 year old patient...me.

His office called me 2 weeks after he put in the request for urgent surgery, telling me to go to emergency if I had any dizzy spells. Hell, I was dizzy then more often than not, so I got my childcare arrangements made and went after supper that night.

It still took 3 days till they got me into surgery. The 2nd day on the cardiac unit my BP was 80/40, and my pulse went down to 16 bpm while I was sleeping. When I woke up the nurse brought me some real coffee (only get decaf on cardiac wards usually).

She was pissed at my cardiologist because he also told her to show me how to disable my monitor so I could go out for a smoke without alarms going off. Then I pointed out to her that nicotine was a stimulant, and told her that my cardio had already told me not to stop smoking until AFTER the pacer was in.

When I went for my 6 week post-op appointment he told me he was going to Texas, and that he would never again be forced to have to tell a patient to smoke in order to save a life, or risk losing a patient because of political BS.

Thankfully, things have improved a bit, but there's still challenges. Damn hard to find a good Dr. these days!! Everyone specializes and there are very few GP's...

While I admit I have not read very much into the new healthcare law/tax from last week, I am not understanding why you say this poster is a lie. I can only speak from my own experiences. My child was very healthy, not even an ear infection. We paid for insurance privately for years via a US firm (like B. Cross) but it was international because we lived out of the country. We could be seen in any country including the US. It was not cheap, but had stipuldations, including number if days in the US/Canada, as well as a non exisitent precription plan. It did not matter we were all super healthy. Then, she got a medical condition that the insurance companies definitely won't cover and requires expensive medication. IT took a while to figure this all out.

When I was back in the US for a while, I had to get new insurance. Domestic insurance, no different in fact via the same companies that offer 'domestic insurance'. Well, couldn't do it. The reason being is that they would not accept her because she had a pre-existing condition, even if I was willing to pay or get a guaranteed plan. Talk about being screwed.

I tried again last year, and due to the changes with kids no longer falling under the pre-existing rule, and now it was all changed, I was able to get it for her. Thanks to the changes in the reform for 1+ year ago.

I never understood any of it till it slapped me in the face...but I can tell you there was no was for me to get her insurance before with a medical condition until the health care changes.

Again, I don't know what this round is changing with the ruling since I have not read, but so far that piece has helped me alot.

That poster is misleading and a lie. They can't be denied insurance now. They were never denied care.


Funny, everyone...100% of all....that receive care have a pre-existing condition. Otherwise you wouldn't need care. You don't go in to the doctor unless something is pre-existing. "Uh yeah doc, I figure I might get sick in 6 months and would like to be treated now for it". That poster is fucked up. Meet the new "tax" less than the old tax...

Justice Ginsberg explained in her decision why you're already getting taxed for the uninsured through increased premiums from insurance companies.

"Unlike markets for most products, the inability to pay for care does not mean that an uninsured individual will receive no care. Federal and state law, as well as professional obligations and embedded social norms, require hospitals and physicians to provide care when it is most needed, regardless of the patient's ability to pay. As a consequence, medical-care providers deliver significant amounts of care to the uninsured for which the providers receive no payment.

Health-care providers do not absorb these bad debts. Instead, they raise their prices, passing along the cost of uncompensated care to those who do pay. In response, private insurers increase their premiums, shifting the cost onto those who carry insurance. The net result: Those with health insurance subsidize the medical care of those without it.

The size of this subsidy is considerable. Congress found that the cost-shifting just described "increases family [insurance] premiums by on average over $1,000 a year." Higher premiums, in turn, render health insurance less affordable, forcing more people to go without insurance and leading to further cost-shifting. Congress therefore passed the individual mandate provision of the ACA to address an economic and social problem that has plagued the nation for decades."

One consequence of today's Supreme Court ruling is that the individual mandate - the linchpin of Obamacare - was redefined by Chief Justice John Roberts as a tax. As in - if someone doesn't buy health insurance - Congress has the power to tax that person. So despite suffering a huge defeat - Conservatives have latched on to this definition of the individual mandate as a tax - in order to criticize President Obama. Speaker of the House John Boehner has scheduled another vote to repeal Obamacare. It's a clown-vote, bro. So what are the political implications moving forward?

Yes. He was a cardiologist for all the right reasons, he truly wanted to save lives. He had a couple patients who died while waiting for a hospital bed.

It almost broke his heart when he almost lost me. Canada's loss was Texas' gain.
