No, actually the MP44 Sturmgewehr was literally called an "assault rifle" in German, it was the first mass produced assault rifle issued in large numbers and that's where the name was coined to differentiate it from "automatic rifles" (the BAR) or semi-auto rifles (M-1 Garand).
