Great! Then why use the vintage look of the band?

It's like "Pink Floyd" releasing a game, and substituting Tony Levin for Roger Waters...

Anthony played and sang on those songs. It wasn't Wolfie and his backing tracks. And it is just nauseating.

    But whatever. It's my opinion..

My guess is that the developers along with VH felt the need to have their "vintage" look in the game because it is so recognizable. And it came to a point where they could've had a "generic" bass player but opted to give Wolf his own "vintage" look, so they took Edward's 1984 clothes and put it on him.

VH historians like ourselves notice right away that Wolf is in Ed's 1984 duds while the rest of the band is in 1978.

Looks out of place but again, its just a video game. I have the recent Legends of Wrestlemania game and while its great to play as vintage wrestlers from different wrestlemanias, its not THAT authentic to the timeline considering the outfits don't match with the year for some.
Except there isn't much fuss nor pretension about the concept of "legitimacy" in wrestling. I think Ed has repeatedly, indirectly referred to his integrity and to Van Halen's legacy. But he was always a drunk talking out of his ass...

Secondly, substituting eras isn't the issue here. The issue here is an almost Stalinist, Soviet Union mindset of historical revisionism and the "nonperson" mentality that is pretty fucking weak and I find offensive as a fan. IMO

That's what you want to believe; whether it is true or not...

He'll get a cut from the songs, that's about it (unless his bass and backing vox were removed from the original recordings and replaced with Wolf's bass and vox). He's got no say over what VH puts out since I believe he signed away rights to the usage of the VH name and all logos (including the Van Hagar logo).

So, maybe he should just shut up and continue with his Chicken Cheese band.
What exactly has he said about this?

Ed is a fucking CHEAT. If he could strip the vocals and bass to cut Mike, he's not doing that to share with the kid, okay?

I seriously question whether the kid even got paid!

I'm stating an opinion based on media reports saying him and Hagar have been nixed from the video game.

Mike hasn't commented directly about the game but I am just guessing he may not be too thrilled by his omission or may not care.

But the point about him signing away rights to the usage of the VH name and logos is a known fact that Mike made clear back in 2005.

            Fair enough.

I don't have the same feelings toward this because it is a video game, first and foremost. Its not like Eddie has done a George Lucas and digitally removed Mike and inserted Wolf for a re-release DVD of the US Festival. THAT I would have a problem with.

I am just glad that, like the 2007-2008 tour, Van Hagar continues to get buried into a musical abyss with the now pending release of Guitar Hero where its focus is on Classic VH songs.

Add to the fact that this is great publicity for Dave Roth since this is a high profile and popular video game with kids and adults alike.

Again, it comes down to the kid element. Activision, regardless of whether or not adults are playing to, are marketing these games to kids too lazy to learn a real guitar. Of course, those kids these days know who Aerosmith, Metallica and Van Halen are because of us, their parents.

Does the average 13 year old know (or even care) who Mike Anthony is? No. If they're familiar with anybody on bass at all, it's Wolf, because that's who they saw playing live last year when they tagged along with their dads to the concert.

It would be fucking cool as shit if you could unlock everybody from a band's history at some point in the game and mix shit up a bit, but apparently that's too much work for the kind folks at Activision.

I would think that Michael Anthony, having played, sang, been credited on and photographed for the original albums that this music appeared on, would have some kind of reasonable expectation to have his likeness present on a game which is focused around music that he was partially responsible for creating. I don't think that's an outlandish claim for him to make.

Frankly, I'd like to see Mike file suit against Van Halen and Activision regarding this and at least get the game's release date postponed until the case gets resolved. In a perfect world, I'd also like to see Mike settle for the addition of his likeness added to the game and a reasonable cut of the profits that would go to the band members afterwards.

Fuck, in a perfect world, Mike'd still be in the band and Ed wouldn't have been such a fucking douchebag when he approached him about rejoining once Roth was back...so what do I know?

                Twistin' by the pool.

I used to draw ACDC characters on my peechee folders at 13. The ones who know, do care.

A cartoon character will be... Dave is gagged, MIA and out playing with guns in some backwoods hillbilly camp.

Activision should have farmed this crap out to Lance Watts and the boys at Crank Farm. Their cartoons really captured the true essence of Van Halen.

Hey Zah, why so bitter? :D

Seriously, the time to be really pissed at the actions of Eddie and Co. have long passed (1996 to be exact).

What's happening with the band nowadays is nowhere near the crap that happened from 1996 to 1998.

Lets back up for a second.
this is not a historical representation of Van Halen.
If so would you have the Shark guitar? Or that yellow Star guitar?
How about bumblebee? Amps, how about the black practice bomb casing?

Will Alex have one bass drum? Bell bottoms on Dave?
This is simply a video game. Not the fucking history channel or VH1 Behind the Music.

Exactly my point. By and large, 13 year olds these days probably don't know much about Van Halen at all...Ed hasn't done an awful lot to keep them in the spotlight, you dig...and without our brainwashing, they probably wouldn't know too much about them at all, at least in so far as Activision has it figured.

                            Dumb but there it is.

Well, it seems to me, I'm gonna eat me some crow, or whatever that fuckin' expression is you amerikaners use.

After years of pointing and laughing and calling names at my friends for playing guitar hero, I'll... well, I can't say it, but I really will have to do it.

Now all we need is an Yngwie Malmsteen Guitar Hero. :D

                                Cheers! :bottle:
