They could have searched and scouted and auditioned and took their time to find the right person, but they obviously thought the Fed Rocker was dropped into their laps by the Rock Gods. If the search had taken a year or two, I always thought Corey Glover from Living Color would have been a great fit, if they found him before LC really broke.
Who else could have replaced Dave in 1985?

I think their mistake was in bringing in an established guy. Personality conflicts were pretty much guaranteed. Living in LA, they had access to scores of good, flashy rock singers, but I think Eddie lacked confidence in his songwriting abilities and wanted someone to bear that burden. Obviously from a financial standpoint, the Sammy choice worked out for them. But I'll always wonder what great music they could have made if they hadn't brought in a guy so determined to make them more comercial sounding.Comment

Dave did his share of trash talk as well, and actually continued with it until they let him back in. Bach was campaigning HARD to replace Sam--Skid Row opened for VH on the Balance tour and he probably saw the writing on the wall as far as Hagars tenure in the band was concerned. I would have loved to have seen an album with different guest vocalists, maybe who should sing with them full-time would've become apparent after that. CVH was heavier music, no doubt, but I don't see it as "dangerous". Hagar era had some heavy stuff that would've suited Dave IMO: A.F.U., Don't Tell Me What Love Can DO (with Roth appropriate lyrics), Poundcake, Finish What Ya Started (Dave went a little country a few years ago), Top of The World (The end of Jump is the start of this tune, not a stretch to think he could do this, and Jump is a bit poppier of the 2), maybe Mine All Mine. Other than Jump, Dave should avoid keyboard-heavy songs. Come to think of it , he should avoid Jump too.Comment

People are so anxious to suck a fart out of Eddies ass that they're combing through Van Hagar material trying to find a winner.
I fucking refuse to do that.
It's the equivalent of dumpster-diving.Comment

Awww, fuck that.
That's one of my favorite parts of the live show where Dave does the spinny twirly kung-fu shit with the mic stand. It just fits absolutely perfect at the end of the guitar solo & during that keyboard solo.“Great losses often bring only a numb shock. To truly plunge a victim into misery, you must overwhelm him with many small sufferings.”Comment

Hambon4lif, just my pointing out some tunes that I thought I could here Dave on, Ed did write some good music after 1984. You are fart sucking if you are trying to expedite an album from eddies dry well, and if you want to blindly state Ed wrote nothing of worth after Dave left, well good for you. you are being consumed by hatred for a man you will never know and longing for another man that you will never know to transport you 26 years into the past. And when Ed does record his farts for Dave to squeal over, you will no doubt allow as how it has erased everything since Panama. And sadaist, sorry, jump is bubble gum, cotton candy that was a clear indication of where the music was heading. Dave and his baton twirling are middle school JV impressive, yes, but on the last tour when he did the whole "tossing the ball up, hitting it and watching it fly while shading my eyes" during his baton major bit, the cringes he caused were numerous and again called attention to how uncomfortable he really felt up there.Comment

Well, I'm not about to read through all this shit, seeing as my opinion is bigger, better, faster, meaner & leaner than everyone else's,so...
Replacing can't be done. Ever. Never. But I'm sure there's a shitload of people who could've fronted Van Halen better than Spambulent did.
Hell, Spambulent himself could've fronted VH better than he did.
For a guy that has otherwise shown great commercial sense, his whole act with VH was horribly terrible. Trying to erase Dave was THE mistake. He probably dit it because that's what Edwina & Alexia wanted & he was willing to suck their balls to stay in Van Halen, but still...
Acknowledge the legend before you, try your best to deliver straight up rock n' roll lyrics & a little attitude, never ever pretend that you're the one that matters & you could've fronted VH better than the Spambulent one.
Easier said than done, I know, but... it could've been done.
Cheers! :bottle:Comment

Gene Simmons was throwing his wig out of his pram back in 1985, because Paul didnt like him doing classic pieces of cinema like the film with Monica's ex out of Friends with the tashe and that movie where he dressed up in makeup and heels. He could have called the band he discovered and asked if they needed a frontman. They may have sucked musically, but at least we'd have gotten a Van Halen pin ball machine and toothbush out of it.Comment
