    3. Every song on Van Halen I and Diver Down is under 4 minutes long.

Damn this should be in my dead VH Songs forum...
That's because when they lost Roth they lost focus.

Well worth the time in my opinion. That song has a lot of nuances to it. Really a brilliant piece of music.

              I couldn't disagree more bro....

I think MWM was a horribly produced song....

The melody forced DLR to sing well below both his lower and above his upper vocal ranges, it sounded terrible....

Yeah, this is my main concern with the new album. Dave has to do what Dave does in his register... He has such a unique sound when he's in his zone. MWM is a great example of not that zone. The high parts sound forced and just don't work IMO.... The music part of it is fantastic.. as you'd expect from VH.

You are probably right. And yes, the cracker analogy fits perfectly. (Hey! This is just a regular old cracker!) But I personally still like the song and include it on the VH playlist every time I burn a new VH mix cd for the truck. Part of it may be romanticizing 'what could/should have been' in 1996. Man....coulda been epic. I was ready to wait in line at Qualcomm Stadium for my tickets with a rented motorhome in the parking lot to follow their asses around the western US.

Oh - my part about calling it brilliant was more towards the music & not the vocals (as much as I still think Dave did ok given the constraints by the sisters. LET THE MAN HAVE HIS PALM TREE!) The fade out at the end is just epic.

I agree, if Dave has to force his vocals, the results are less than stellar and quite frankly, are cringe-inducing. Let's hope the new album doesn't feature anything like this...

I think Roth has to take some responsibility for MWM not being quite right too.

There is a disconnect between the verse and the chorus and it doesn't flow. How you divide up the blame between the failure to get the melodies right and the difficulty of doing so in a separate bubble from where the music is being written whilst coping with a 3 section pre chorus is debatable.
