Elvis Presley has 2 titles that will be awarded "GOLD" soon and The King has been gone 35 summers this August.

and Van Halen with Diamond can't move 400,000 units instantaneously ...

Most of those who bought Van Halen albums are 40-50 years old today.
It's been too fucking long since 1984... Most of them have lost interest in buying or even listening
to VH, they've turned towards different stuff marital life got them into.
I guess a good part of them would have remained hooked to the band's career, hadn't they split and
given way to Van Hagar to spoil it.
Damn, what a waste, how much would they have achieved with Dave in 25 years, if only they had been
able to carry on that long together, of course...

Music itself has changed, too. There were more guitar-driven bands among best sellers in 1984-1992 -
there was already a majority of shitty pop, as there was 10 years before for example, but it seems that
the part of shit in music sales has been growing steadily, I may be wrong but it's what I think has been
          happening.
People seem to be less and less hard-to-please as far as their ears are concerned, and the mainstream
industry, together with the media, contributes to shrink their artistic judgement and make them mistake shit
          for gold...
If only pasteurised, tasteless cheese is available in a given country, a whole nation will forget what true cheese is
(non pasteurised, made with whole milk) and everyone will buy and eat what can only be found.
Some will not buy, but cheese will be nothing but the insipid stuff that remains the only stuff.

2012 Van Halen music isn't sanitized, it's still raw (and refined at the same time), it doesn't numb
your neurons but invigorates them. Unfortunately, the music industry has worked towards the pasteurization
of music and people's musical tastes.

The risk of turning into an old fart who'll keep on saying it's all shit and everything was better before (which I'm
really not far from) is high.
1984 is just as far from now as it was from rock 'n' roll pioneers - how many albums did Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran
and Johnny Kid & the Pirates still sell?

I don't know how today's heavy metal bands sell, records sales aren't comparable to what they were at VH's heyday, some
very interesting and amazing stuff can be found out there, but record sales charts don't show the real impact of metal, I hope.
Maybe it's the last sphere where music is still alive nowadays.

Van Halen has been gone for too long while music became duller and duller and a non-neglectible part of their audience got older...

We did, but we kept our ears clean. :D

I've been wondering, what is A Different Kind of Truth's album sales this week compared to Van Halen I or 1984.

Just thought it would be an interesting comparison....

That's pretty good for a legacy act in this day and age that doesn't advertise, has a shit website and is as secretive as can be.

After eleven weeks on the charts, Van Halen’s latest album has sold around 363,500 copies.
Had a look at that site, Metal Insider - I'm sure it is just a blog, where some dude (probably) details numbers compiled from public sources, such as Hits Daily Double - which allows you to tally weekly totals if an album is on the chart.

The only people who probably know the true total sold will be Interscope, I'd think.

Back in the old days of music journalism, the music press, they probably had a PR department a journo could call up to check on those kind of facts for background info on a story / profile.

Is there any chance that VH will play to a million paying customers on this US / North America tour, but have difficulty selling a million? They coulda added a 'free' CD and ten dollars to the ticket price and claimed a million sold that way ...!

I agree with you. Interscope probably have a pretty good idea but i'll bet the only way to know for sure the number of units sold would be for Interscope to request RIAA to run the total and give them a number. I'll bet as soon as the label feels they are close to 500k they will request this for certification.
