One CD greatest hits always sell better than doubles. The Beatles 1 proves it. It's sold 8+ million copies in three years, I believe. The two double CD Beatles packages released in the 70's sold well, but not that well in that short of time period.

Really? You're going to compare the most influentual pop rock band in history and their single disc of all #1 songs to Van Halen??

Come on get a better analogy because there are about 20 bands that come between The Beatles and Van Halen in the grand scheme of musical history.

Not because of the 3 new songs but because this CD will appeal to the casual fan.
This 2 CD set is a definite catalogue killer as it has most if not all of the songs a casual fan knows and loves.
Again this will make tons of money in the long run for Dave and Sammy.

Keep dreaming, Private Vaghina. This CD set is a sham,
plain and simple. Van Haggis couldn't even come up with
any live versions of their post DLR shit to put on the album.
They had to resort to using Dave's songs. Nuff said to you,
        skank muffin.

i'd guess he'd buy the cheaper one. I would (considering if i knew nothing about the band) plus doesn't the bobw have pain in the ass packaging? boV1 has pretty much the same tracks anyway.

There's a few reasons why Van Halen reached 'Influential' status.

            1 - David Lee Roth
            - It's no secret that he had single-handed responsibility for Media & P.R., lyrics and 33% of musical input.

2 - Sheer curiousity after 1984 - Fans who saw how huge '1984' was, combined with the curiousity of how Sammy would merge with the VH Bros. counted for the 5150 tour and album

3 - Eddie Van Halen - People want to see Eddie rip through guitar chords live and on CD before and after 1984, CDs and on tours. Period. NOT for Sammy. And although Eddie isn't with his true musical soulmate, David Lee Roth, it's still entertaining to watch this guy torch his fretboard with his fingers. Lately, however, his musical prowess appears to be on a downward spiral. This is a result of Sammy Hagar not pushing him musically the way that David Lee Roth did. Taste the difference.

4 - Roth-Era Material - Even after Roth's departure from the live stage several years ago, people still pay to hear Eddie, Alex and Mike to play old favourites. But make no mistake, they don't particularly prefer to hear Hagar sing those songs, despite what Sammy makes himself believe.

5 - Women Love Romantic Ballads - Nuff said. Doesn't matter if it's Journey, Air Supply, Danger Danger, Celine Dion or Phil Collins, a sappy love song with the occasional inspirational lyric makes women melt. And any straight guy will tell you, that if it'll make 'em melt, then buy 2 tickets. This is the entire secret behind Van Hagar.

There simply ARE NO OTHER REASONS for Van Halen/Van Hagar's influential success.

I'm embarassed by this Best of Both Worlds thing.
I know it clouds my judgement of the release.

It did get mention in the Sunday paper circulars for Target, Best Buy and others. That should give it a nice spike at the sale prices.

The advertising and marketing is there. I just don't see a consumer base since people have all this music--the original CDs, BOV1 or the new three on download.

The packaging certainly is not gonna make the difference.

Kids looking to find out more about VH are savvy enough from the internet that they'll buy Van Halen I before this car crash.

Who really gives a shit how the new Van Halen release sells?

If something gets put out under the name Van Halen and contains either new material from the classic lineup or previously unreleased material from the classic lineup, then you'll have something worth buying. Otherwise, matters not.

You better fuckin' get some glasses, man. I gave you an example of why single disc greatest hits sell better than double-disc sets.

I never said Van Halen was in the Beatles league. I know the Beatles are the best band ever, dick.

I told you that the BOBW would not sell as well as BOV1. It won't, period.

You are stupid and your command of the english language is poor.
I am far superior to you in everyway.
If you want to make a valid point you can start by never referring to Van Halen in the same breath as the Beatlles.
Now drop and give me 5150 you fool.

Package most of their material from the last best of and add a few mediocre throw-away tunes...

                      Pure genius.

Why was this approach cool in 1996 when the band wanted to reintroduce Dave but not cool when the band wants to reintroduce Sammy in 2004?

Gee, I may be coming from left field here, but, I think that the difference is this...The 1996 re-introduction actually appealed to people. The 2004 re-introduction is about as anti-climactic as...oh...The Starlight Vocal Band getting together or something.

No, Bad example. People would actually anticipate that more.

                          There. That's a good comparison.

Ok the "General" has made a strange observation. They are using the same marketing approach they used before. If this abhoration you call Van Hagar is even partially talented why not just release a new album?? New approach to selling it?? Why try to scrape in Van Halen fans with old material?? Here's an idea {They don't have the talent to pull it off} Eddie is too much of a drunk to play. Sober him up! Jesus this reaks of fraud selling one group of material as someone else. Hey Dave, Great job avoiding this trainwreck called VH.
David Lee Roth made VH great, don't forget it.
