Those numbers are pathetic for Van Halen.

Oh, how the mighty have fallen.

It's a good thing they had the Dave tracks on there, otherwise only the people from the Links would have bought it.

Im starting to enjoy reading the spamsters excuses now !
Fookin funny. General CD's sales have been in decline, cd
defects, etc etc. Did they ever consider for one moment,
its because its not what the majority of fans wanted, after
all this time ?? Can they not fathom this in their little worlds
of Spammy Pajammys and Mikey Birthday Cabo bashes..

Van Halen was up there with Led Zep. Van Hagar never was.
Look at the last release of Led Zeps. (Ok it was a DVD)
but none the less... It fucking sold shitloads !!!

Going to blame Declining CD's and 14 year olds and CD defects
on that ?? There are hard rock artists still selling. Fucking Jimmy
Buffett is kicking Van Halens ass ? Is that due to 14 year olds
            and declining CD sales.....

You guys fucking crack me up..

The reason BOV1 sold, at all, was new songs from the original band.
(The band of the Led Zep status)

Fuck all your bullshit reasons.. They are starting to sound as stupid
as why Van Hagar never soldout any shows.. (Oh its a slow concert
year) Yeah whatever.. Fuck off.. There are concerts out there that are
            doing great.. (Just not Hagars)

Geezuz.. You guys are reaching deep now....
BABY PANA 2 IS Coming !! All across the land, let the love and beer flow !
            Love ya Mary Frances!

the defects have nothing to do with the sales as about 10% of the fan base knew about them before getting the CDs. Yes downloads and declining sales had a lot to do with where it ended up selling...at number 3 on billboard with pretty much the # people are opening up these days. I would expect that the ITunes sales on the three new songs were probably pretty strong compared to the album sales.

its disgusting how much simpson sold...this only leads more to the decline of music as the pop/pre teen market is still such a huge draw.

panamark - i agree that original lineup put VH up with Zepplin but the first installment of van hagar did keep them there and solidified that. you cant really say that the relativly small amount of cds they did with dlr made them legends...it takes far more than that.

VH market has considerably decreased no matter who the singer is. i still believe that dlr would bring back sellouts but not multiple. vh doesnt have the base to do multiple sellouts anymore in a city...even with dlr at the helm. they have fucked everyone too many times

Hey! Didn't Michael Bolton used to be in a metal rock band back in the day? He would be the perfect 4th VH singer!

Well, if Led Zeppelin is a legend, which they indeed are, and VH's "origianal lineup put them up with Zeppelin;" then how does that not make original Van Halen anything less than legendary???

If after those albums VH could already be compared to Zeppelin, what more proof of a legend do you need? That is the ultimate comparison!

You are contradicting yourself in saying that they needed Hagar to solidify Van Halen in the history books of legendary rock bands. If Hagar or Cherone had never entered into the picture, and people had not heard Van Halen since that last tour with Roth; Van Halen would still be seen as a golden god in rock. Even after centuries gone by, Roth Van Halen would remain in continuous airplay and a crucial necessity for rock radio stations worldwide. Hagar doesn't change the fact that when a human develops the ability to use his/her brain cells effectively while also discovering music as rock and roll, the seemingly unavoidable discovery of Van Halen will not follow too far behind the desire to purchase one's first Zeppelin album. That is a simple fact!

I mean, look at The Doors. Morrison's career was very short-lived, but yet no one could solidify the Doors as legends but him. He didn't need anyone stepping in after his death to finalaize the already inevitable fact that The Doors were a permanet fixture in the minds and hearts of anybody who knows and lives rock music.

                  Amen.

your right i did contradict myself...i didn't do a very good job saying what I wanted to and I will use your Doors example to try and explain my thinking better.

The Doors were not legends until after Morrison's death. Some of the albums were not received well and their live show did nothing but hurt them in many cases since Morrison was so loaded during the shows. Read the new book about Morrison's life and you will read exactly that. After Morrison's death the Doors recorded two more records with the band taking over vocals and they were obviously not received well. The label put out another greatest hits record that took off and surprised them at how well it sold. Fans were going back and finding the Doors and hearing about the legend of Morrison and this is what elevated them to legend status.

Now VH was not a legend when DLR was in the band, nor were they when Sam was in the band. Their music was as strong as Zepplins and as influential...but not legendary. It took DLR leaving for the band to achieve legendary status. The band definitly changed with Hagar and brought in new fans, even if you dont like the musical direction. The new fans were exposed to the stories of the DLR years and elevated the band into something that they were not. fathers told sons, older bros told younger bros, and so on.

Im still doing a pretty awful job of figuring out what Im trying to say. I would say that VH created a style of music that later was copied by almost every hair metal band. No matter how long they had been around, the hair metal bands all died when grunge hit...including big sellers like Def Leppard and Bon Jovi. I think it took Hagar coming to the band and bringing his style of "cheese" for the band to survive where Def Leppard and all those bands faded away.

Well, if music rocks...it just rocks! It is as simple as that! I don't think anything besides the music itself, is responsible for making it what it is today. :p
