ALEX VH

Alex is a good drummer although his timing live (especially in the early years) was erratic. The real key is that not only were Bonham and Moon before him but so were Ginger Baker, Carmine Appice, and Tommy Aldridge. I tend to think of Alex' most creative work within the framework of songs like HFTeacher. When it comes to influence though, there were just so many before him that were already doing groundbreaking work. In terms of double bass although Baker was before them, C Appice & T Aldridge really set the standard for the way heavy rock drummers play today. And Alex' solo's live were always too repetitive and relied too much on standard licks like the quads (2 on the hand 2 on the feet) that SOOOO many drummers used in the 80's. Within the context of many of VH's songs though he's come up with some wonderful licks and rythmic patterns. No doubt about that.

Yes, Alex has sold 560 bazillion records over his career. Not arguing that. Doesn't make him one of the world's best drummers, though, because he isn't. He's certainly talented, but I've certainly heard better.

Here's some advice - if you haven't heard better musicians than the dudes in your favorite band playing to dink-ass audiences in small clubs and bars, you need to get out more. Trust me on that, because they're out there.
