Alex was a fantastic drummer....i'd go so far as to say up until the Balance album, I loved all of his tuff (electric drum she-at excluded, of course).

He's become a hack lately...repeating the same beats and rythms. No one has noticed, thought, because they're all covering their ears to avoid Roy's fork-on-a-chalkboard screaches.

sure he's an asshole...but one of the best rock drummers of all time....listen to him lay it down in Loss of Control or the breakdown in light up the sky...incredible...some poeple try to discount his talent becuase of personality but he is awesome and has played great on every album.

Spock is/was a good drummer, but not a great one. I've been in bands with better drummers and hey, I live in Belgium! So there are thousands of super talented drummers everywhere, relatively unknown to the public. You better believe it! Fact is : he was lucky to have a great guitarplayer as a brother and to have the most charismatic frontman in his band. Word up!

Shemp Van Halen is an average/above average drummer. Ya don't hear of any young drummers bein' from the Alex Van Halen school, do ya! I have to find the issuse, but Alex was voted drummer of the year back in the day. And he was also voted 1 of the top ten drummer's at that time.
But I have to say as well I liked his drumming from the songs! Those solo's sucked because it was always the same.

here is what i think makes vh such a great band(besides dlr being the greatest front man and greatest human being ever obviously) alex van halen and micheal anthony are a great rythm section......the lying dutchman does his thing on guitar, and alex and mike hold it down steady......mike thumps on the bass and gives the music a nice heavy rock feel, and alex plays good beats and knos when to make the drums heavy.......thats what i love about vh music, is the heaviness........hes not one of the all time great rock talents, but he knew how to make vh sound good instrumentally
