    So, Lets Talk About Dave

So, lets talk about David Lee Roth.

One simple rule. You can use the questions below to get started or take this in any direction you so desire, as long as you leave it about Roth only.

    1. We all want to meet him/see him again. If he were here live and in person, and you were only allowed one question, what would you ask him?

    2. If Dave wanted to know why you like him, and you could only give him one reason, what would that be?

    3. Have you actually met David Lee Roth? If so, did that change your opinion of him, and in what way?

    4. David has always been a very vocal person, how honest do you think he is in his interviews and book?

    5. What is your favorite David Lee Roth interview and why?

    6. What do you see David doing next?

    7. Here is one for the old timers. Did any of you ever see Mammoth or Red Ball Jets. (remember, only Roth comments allowed)

    8. If you had to admit that Dave had ever fucked up in his life, what would you say was his biggest mistake?

    9. If you could switch places with the Diamond one for one week, and one week only, would you, and what would you do for that week?

    10. Whatever the hell else you want to talk about that has to do with *** you guessed it*** Diamond David Lee Roth.

    Cool Thread!!!

Lets see...I think that DAVE has gotten PROGRESSIVELY more honest in his interviews. The early ones were more self-promotion for the BAND and himself. But always in the context of gaining more noterity for the band. I believe that CRAZY FROM THE HEAT was a pretty honest account of HIS side to most stories surrounding the band. And he has ALWAYS come across as a straight-shooter.

I would ask him SPECIFICLY about the footage that was taken from the 1980 WORLD INVASION TOUR. I would like to know how extensive it is and if the band seriously considered releasing it. It would give his fans some REAL ammo to use against the SISTERS in getting a live DVD of DAVE & VANHALEN released, like the LED ZEPPELIN DVD that was released to RAVE reviews and huge sales last summer. It's what CLASSIC VAN HALEN fans deserve and would put a HUGE exclamation point! on the CLASSIC VAN HALEN legacy. ROTH ON BRO!!!!

Very Good. My favorite interview is the 1986 Playgirl Interview and I felt he was, for the most part, honest in that interview. The book is another story. But thats just it, it is a story, and it is his to tell anyway he wants.

        1. I would ask, "Hey, how's it goin?"

        2. Style and Attitude

        3. Never met him, and, in fact, with one exception there have been strange obsticles that have stood in the way of me seeing him live.

        4. Honest with facts, showbiz with his opinions.

        5. Once he hosted Friday Night Videos in 1986. Wasn't really an interview, but it marked his return to rock after leaving Van Halen. He premiered the Yankee Rose Video, and talked about his previous work, the new band, and his plans for the future.

        6. A new DLR Band CD with a tour. Or, if possible, a VH reunion.

        7. Guess, I'm not that much of an old timer.

        8. Letting his voice go, circa ALAE. Glad to see he's finally got it back in shape.

        9. YES! and I would tour the fucking world.

        10. Dave Rocks. Get to work on that new DLR Band CD.

          # 3, doesn't that suck. I have not seen him live since 83. Maybe this fall we will get our chance!

Yes, this is a great thread.

I will just answer Question 8. Everything about "Skyscraper" could have been better. I read a thread on here where someone thought "Knucklebones" should have been the first single. I couldn't agree more. Here is the deal. When you are a major act, one strategy a record company will do is release a good single first, but save the GIANT hit as a follow up. This way, they know the big fans will buy it immediately anyway. MTV will play the first video all day anyway. The rock stations will play the first release immediately. Then they can get to work and really push the 2nd single. It works if you are an established act like Dave was. Anyhwow, the core fans were looking for Dave to ROCK more so than do pop songs like "Paradise". Where is the signature riff in the song? Where is the rocking part? Even the solo isn't full on rock. The videos gets released and you see Dave in that ridiculous Arabian outfit. I couldn't believe it. Who the hell designed that? He looks better in anything from a torn shirt to leather to spandex - anything! THe band just stood there in the video. Dave had the hair weave going. That was BAD. He fires Billy Sheehand hires Matt Bisonette? Are you serious? The guy looked likea dork and played bad. He really looked like a wanna be - he looked like hack. Sunglasses and a headband? Be serious. If any of you gys were around for the EEAS tour like I was, I was shocked to see the band walk around the stage like they did. It was like Dave suddenly forgot everything he knew. He always knew what was COOL. He had a gut on that tour and it was just a major disappointment. This was still the '80's and his competition had BIG guitar music, full on rock clothing, and was out there ROCKING still. You could go see Guns & Roses, AC/DC, Iron Maiden, or whoever on any night. It made no sense to me what Dave was selling. I always thought that if he was not the great David Lee Roth at that time that "Skyscraper" would not be a success. Even the CD is a very low output CD. Put it in your CD player and then put another rock CD in right afterwards. It was real low, like it was cheaper to make or something. The songs were decent, but how can anyone say that "Skyscraper" KICKED ASS? Dave was changing direction and I support him when he does things that make me say "WTF?", but he moved away from the giant guitar rock of EEAS WAY TOO SOON. Every major rock album would sell a million copies at that time. It was a hugely profitable time for rock bands and record companies. You could spend all your money at a record store and there were still good rock albums that you would need to get with next week's paycheck. The mild success of Skyscraper was a real indication of the disconnect between what that album was and what people were expecting. Does anyone agree? Am I crazy?

OK, well I know I am crazy, but does anyone agree?

Do you mean "Skyscraper" tour? If so, than "Yes". I saw it twice live and I have 2 bootlegs. It couldn't even compare to the EEAS tour. Anyone lucky enough to attend the EEAS tour like I did (twice), surely would see the difference between that and the following "Skyscraper" tour. There was a big dropoff

Failing any kind of coherent speech, I would probably just drool. I think he'd get the idea.

                      3. Have you actually met David Lee Roth? If so, did that change your opinion of him, and in what way?
Yes, I have, but I don't think my opinion changed at all.

                      4. David has always been a very vocal person, how honest do you think he is in his interviews and book?
I think he calls it the way he sees it.

                      5. What is your favorite David Lee Roth interview and why?
My favorite David Lee Roth interview is the one I'll eventually do with him for my site (yeah, right )

                      6. What do you see David doing next?
Graduating from EMT school and rescuing an injured, redheaded California tourist

                      7. Here is one for the old timers. Did any of you ever see Mammoth or Red Ball Jets. (remember, only Roth comments allowed)
No, but I know people that did.

                      8. If you had to admit that Dave had ever fucked up in his life, what would you say was his biggest mistake?
Saying "Tonight isn't about your fucking hip" to Eddie after the MTV awards. While true, it probably wasn't the best comment he could have made at that particular moment.

                      9. If you could switch places with the Diamond one for one week, and one week only, would you, and what would you do for that week?

I would probably say to myself, self, why did you get so

loaded tonight? I would then turn to Dave, smile, and vomit

                        on his shoes.

                              1. I'm Mezro...did you ever read my first thread at the Roth Army?

                              2. I'm a Dave fan because he is a creative freak and knows that entertainment is meant to be fun.

                              3. N/A

                              4. I think he is true to his recollection of events. All entertainers are full of shit on some level.

                              5. The 1995 Leno interview. Dave bombed big time, knew it but still kept chugging along. That takes balls.

                              6. Directing music/adult vids or another shot at Vegas.

                              7. Not that old.

8.(tie) Leaving Van Halen/1996 if he indeed told Eddie "this night is about me not about your hip." Not sure how true that is though.

                              9. Speaking as Dave: "I'd wire 35% of my money to Mezro and let him guide my career."

                              10. Dave needs to meet Ed halfway in the ego department for VH to ever fly again.

                              Mezro...great idea for a thread...we should all give Ims2 a vote...
