The college rule book states that any fumble with 2 minutes or less in a half or in the game...is spotted where the ball is fumbled...not where it goes out of bounds.

It's a rule that's been there for ages...

He fumbled the ball at the 1 foot line...it flew out around the 3 yard line...but it doesn't matter...since noone recovered before it went out of bounds...

As I've said previously, instant replay and officiating generally is a two way street, some calls go one way and some go another... if that 1st down Samardjzia had in the first half, where he clearly had neither foot in bounds would have stalled a touchdown drive, and who knows... the Irish might have been 7 down in the 4th.

I don't have a problem with how the game ended. As Pojo quoted the rule, and quite frankly when I was looking at it, the ball was dangerously close to crossing the end zone plane when it popped loose, so a spot at the 1 is about as good as both teams could expect given human error.

Would I have wanted a different spot? Would I rather have an Irish win? Hell yes. But this was a great game for college football (maybe not so fun for us Irish fans)... but you can't deny that it was exciting football, with playmaking, drama, two class teams, and the perfect college football setting... and Coach Carroll showed he and Leinart and the whole USC offense have MAJOR stones for even going for it instead of kicking for an overtime.... and I give Coach Weis credit for being able to visit the USC locker room after a heartbreaking loss and giving them congratulations... this is one of those games in college football, and ND-USC lore, that will stick around for a long time... all in all, I think, short of an Irish win, this was as good as college football has been in a hell of a long time.

As for the AP, it looks like ND was "rewarded" for a "good loss" as they are still at #9. The ESPN/USAToday poll has them at #12, which is where I thought they might fall to, given the LSU and Texas Tech wins, and a couple other factors.

Tennessee I believe (maybe BYU next week) are the only teams on the schedule with winning records. Stanford, Syracuse, and Navy should be in the bag.... If ND pulls off the win at Tennessee, which now looks quite do-able, a 9-2 record and a BCS Bowl would still be a successful first year for Weis. Hell, if he wins a BCS Bowl game, that will make me happy... we haven't won a Bowl game since what? 1993?

Wouldn't mind seeing ND-FlaSt or ND-PennSt... UCLA just doesn't look good enough to win out, but they've won ugly for three weeks in a row, so who knows... if they play USC like they played WSU, they'll lose by 40.

If ND wins out, with a win over Tennessee... I can't imagine the BCS not matching ND up with FlaSt or LSU... either of those matchups would be a good bowl game.

I'm not sure UCLA's SOS would leave them ranked #2... not only that... I think that UCLA would fall at least one spot, depending on who Texas and VaTech lose to and when... I just can't see a Pac-10 National Championship game this year... of course, anything could happen... Best guess is that pollsters would consider that final game and loss to USC as UCLA's chance at the top dog, and give someone else a chance in the Rose Bowl...
