Agreed. I don't give a shit about Osama surrendering or any question that it was somehow illegal to go get him.

I've got a great line about the...ummm..."availability" of one of my ex-wives, but maybe it would be a better idea to try to take the high road here.

And the last I heard, Bin Laden was dead. Merging.

I actually agree that a UN report is a bad idea.

However, the notion that international law doesn't trump the US constitution with regard to events which occur outside US soil is a little odd, to say the least.

Right! The U.N. is only useful for providing cover for invading other countries when cleverly used for faux-altruistic motives....

Chimpy didn't have a problem "trumping" the Constitution when he launched illegal wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Of course he's also on record as telling his own war advisors "stop throwing the Constitution in my face. It's just a goddamn piece of paper"

How were Iraq and Afghanistan illegal? Answer that.

Is the action in Libya illegal as well?

Probably not. The problem is the lies & hypocrisy. Why do we protect the civilians there and not all the other places in the world...some with much more brutal governments. How does bombing Ghaddafis house and blowing up tanks help in establishing a 'no-fly-zone'? How does supplying the rebels with weapons help enforce a 'no-fly-zone'? Who are the rebels?

It's very simple yet our President won't ever tell us. The US doesn't like Ghaddafi and Libya has oil.

With Egypt & Tunisia recently having successful revolutions, lets ride the wave & see if we can spark Libyas people to do the same. Ghaddafi fights back and now we find ourselves in a big fucking undefined mess with no clear plan and a small, unreliable, misfit group of rebels to hook our carts to. I know....let's go in to that compound we have known about for years and finally kill Osama Bin Laden. That'll take everyone's focus off of what a clusterfuck Libya is turning out to be. Make sure we announce Bin Laden late on a Sunday night when everyone is sure to be home & nothing else is going on.

Fuck...listen to me. I think I need Ford to make me an extra tin-foil hat. Last time I ever get metal fillings put in at the dentist.

According to the Constitution, war is declared by Congress. That was not the case in Afghanistan or Iraq. Or Vietnam and Korea, for that matter. Furthermore, NONE of the above have anything to do with the actual defense of the United States of America.

Libya falls under a slightly different category because that's a UN thing, But I'm not crazy about that bullshit either. Khadaffi is a douchebag, and I wouldn't shed a tear for him if someone emptied a magazine into his skull. But he is not now, nor has he ever been, a credible threat to the USA.

But we have had military operations against Libya in direct response to his killing of Americans, as opposed to Iraq or Vietnam or Korea....

Afghanistan is a toss-up.... The objective to kill/capture Bin Laden frankly only lasted the first few months, then after he escaped from Tora Bora (thanks, "W") the mission came very convoluted, as it is now.....

But you're right, none of those involved the actual declaration of war....

I doubt we'll ever see Congress declare war again...

Did we declare war officially for the first Iraq war in 1990? For some reason I am thinking that we did not. When was the last official US declaration of war? Other than on terrorism, drugs, and the middle class.

Iraq fell in a very 'iffy' legal middle ground. Whether it was morally justified or not is a separate issue, but legally Blair and Bush were on shaky ground: the issue is not clear either way.

The Libian action isn't illegal because the UN sanctioned it - the resolution's wording on the issue for 'protecting civilians' is so vague that the countries involdved have a lot of lee-way.
