That was a result of fighting the Egyptians in the desert. The Israelis were using FAL rifles which shot 7.62 NATO and the Egyptians had AK-47s. The FAL was hard to control on full auto and had jamming problems in the sand. The AK's just kept firing lead and were more controllable. The Israelis were impressed and set off to design their own. They went with a Finnish Sako milled receiver instead of stamped and a few other things like a bipod that doubles as a wire cutter. The Galil and Sako are the best built AKs out of all of them. The Romanian ones are probably the most roughly made ones. They all seem to go bang when the trigger is pulled though.

I dated a girl in the IDF. She had a government issued uzi she took everywhere and was even hanging on the bed at night. Mostly uzis in 1987 but now I notice they are packing M5 carbines and M16s. I guess the US gave them a bunch of them and they just use them because hey, they were free and with the right lubricant and maintenance they work. I didn't see too many Galils and when I asked they used mostly in vehicles that were traveling around the countryside. They are more robust and can bang around in the back of a vehicle in the dust and fire when needed. The American assault rifles were popular if you were on foot because they are lighter.

Yeah, the FAL was susceptible to dust, and was hard to control on full auto (which one really doesn't want to use in actual sustained combat anyways). But then, the FAL could kill at ranges the AK couldn't even be used for indirect fire at, in a wide open space of the desert...

The ideal thing is not to put all your apples in one cart really, which is why they now have intermediate marksmen weapons (basically highly modified AR-10s and M-14s that are fifty year old designs or more)...

I saw one of those helicopters flying close by, once. I thought to myself with awesome "toys" like that no one would them give up. Even I would be tempted by such. It was so quiet, and the noise it did make was very pleasant. I thought the only way to take that kind of toy away and put it to good use would be to redirect the attention of the user to another purpose.

Meh...never been in a NYC subway. But I am sure everyone tries to mind their own business, not make eye contact, and just get home from a miserable day & commute from work.


I did enjoy seeing all the people gather in front of the White House the night of the announcement. I wonder if they were loud enough to be heard from in the White House.

The NYC subway is pretty much that. On the old spray painted up trains that looked like something out of The Warriors the PA system totally sucked and you couldn't understand a thing being said. Also, the smell of a New York subway station on a hot muggy summer night is really something.

All the action is on the Long Island Railway. That's where the crazy shit happens. Lot's of fights and arguing on that one.
