Just a bit of insight here...since the events of 9/11, any major event here in Boston is always accompanied by a large police presence, be it on two legs or four. That includes the Esplanade concert/fireworks every July 4th, as well as each of the victory parades for the sports teams here.
I find nothing odd about it, sadly, it's the world we live in now...

I'm thinking credible threats must be coming in and our guys are trying to handle them without being alarming. Such a no win situation. If they tell everybody of the threat, no one shows up to partake in the day. They tell no one, suddenly, everyone questions their overwhelming presence. I'll take the latter over the former any day.

If I had just set a bomb in a building, I probably wouldn't want to be on the roof of that building, or any other building in the immediate vicinity, just as a precaution. Not only because of the explosion, but also because it would make an escape much less likely.
