When Reagan signed that bill he was under the assumption new laws making it much more difficult for employers to hire illegals by requiring them to prove they're legally eligible to work here and fines for employers that hire them anyway would make it harder for illegals to get legit jobs here. Unfortunately employers found ways to get around these laws.

The illegal immigration problem is an easy fix. Well, relatively easy:

Secure the southern border
Start rounding up all the illegals who have committed other crimes, aside from coming here. Ship those back in a hot box car to Dirtville.
Set up a path to citizenship for the rest.
Streamline the process for people to come here legally.

Now, why hasn't this happened yet? Because neither the far left nor the far right want it to happen. If it did then there goes one of the major planks of their campaigns.
