Uh...and SOME people do not...
When it comes to the law and legal freedoms, there is no such thing as compromising. The fact of the matter is: RELIGIONS DO NOT OWN THE CONCEPT OF MARRIAGE.
So if churches do not like gay people getting married, DON'T ALLOW THEM TO DO SO IN YOUR CHURCHES. Funny thing is, this is the same ridiculous argument that was made 20 years ago. It didn't work then...and it sure doesn't work now.
There is this little thing called separation of church and state.
You can keep whatever your take on marriage is in YOUR CHURCH. You cannot take your religion and dictate to the government what constitutes marriage.
I don't believe the government has the right to tell different religions what sorts of ceremonies they must perform. BUT AT THE SAME TIME, churches CANNOT take traditions in their religion (or modern interpretations of said traditions) and impose them on legal rights.
We now (as of 2021 data) live in a country in which approximately 3 out of 10 Americans (myself included) have no religious affiliation. WE are not willing to COMPROMISE with those of religious affiliation who DO NOT recognize gay marriage by saying, "Hey, gay people...I know you want to be married too. But it's really making those who believe in Jesus but also believe in intolerance of homosexuality upset. SO, why don't you just call it a civil union to keep the bigots happy?"
No. You know why? Because you can worship a blade of grass if you want to. It's none of my business. But you can't dictate the law based on what you believe said blade of grass represents.
As of 2022, 71% of Americans (regardless of religious affiliation) stated that they are fine with gay marriage.
I cannot even believe that you're still trying these tired old arguments. No! You can't have the keys to the wine cellar!Comment

Western society is breaking along the line of who believes in the Bible and who doesn’t. Simple as that. That in itself is biblical. No! You can't have the keys to the wine cellar!Comment

The point I’m making is if you defined the legal part of marriage as a civil union then you don’t ruffle the feathers of the people who still believe in the Bible. The thing is gay marriage doesn’t have much of a history. So all a sudden this new concept becomes a thing. Yeah it’s going to cause a social stir. Words mean things.
You see, marriage is a human phenomenon, not a Christian one. The Bible (and all churches) have created their own version of it's recognition under their own Gods. But marriage goes back at least 6,500 years.
To rename it something else with the same rights (civil union) so that it doesn't "ruffle the feathers" (as you keep saying) of a minority of the population who believe same-sex couples should NOT be afforded the same societal status is one of the lamest justifications I've heard. Seriously, over 70% of the country considers denying it to same-sex couples just another form of bigotry. But you keep insisting that we shouldn't "ruffle feathers" of bigots or those who believe their religion somehow should transcend human society WAY BEFORE CHRISTIANITY and American law Constitutionally recognized as OUTSIDE religion, protected by a clear separation of church and state.
I'm sorry to break it to you, but the 71% of Americans (ESPECIALLY THOSE WHO ARE GAY AND WANT TO BE MARRIED) really don't typically give a shit about "ruffling feathers" of people who believe a portion of our population deserve less rights than others.
I'm agnostic. I have some atheistic friends who believe they should spend their time pushing their own beliefs about God's supposed non-existence onto those who believe He does exist. I have no interest in such conversations. My wife believes in God and I'm happy for her. I personally got married in a Catholic church because it made my wife's family happy and my family didn't care. But the minute those same people had decided to tell me just what KIND of a marriage I could have, one that would perhaps have a different name and be recognized in a manner separate from others, I would have told those same people to go fuck themselves.
To keep going back to the need not to "ruffle feathers" is the last desperate grasp of someone who knows all the other facts are against them so they keep begging people to not progress so that it keeps the minority of those who hate gay people and somehow believe that Jesus would have wanted to live a very exclusive society from being angry.
It's not an argument. It's basically saying, "Hey, I know you're TECHNICALLY right, but couldn't everybody be happy if we just GAVE these people the same legal rights but called it something else to keep the country clubbers happy?" And the answer is, FUCK NO. Who cares if they don't like it?
To argue that people asking for their own legal rights are dividing the country is moronic.
I tend to look at it as I live my own life and get angry if people try and limit my own reasonable freedoms. I could give a shit how other people live their own lives as long as they are not reasonably messing with my life and my family's life or normal people.
WANT ANOTHER TEST: Who are really affected by gay marriage? The religious people who think homosexuality is disgusting? Jesus? Churches? No...they're not affected one bit. They don't like it...so they simply don't need to go to a gay wedding. Does it makes their lives any worse if gay people are called "married" instead of "joined by civil union"? No, this does NOT remotely affect their own lives. NO. THE ONLY PEOPLE AFFECTED BY WHETHER OR NOT THERE ARE GAY MARRIAGES...ARE GAY PEOPLE. That's it. One could not make a reasonable argument as to why it affects anyone else. Not one.
I've even heard this: "Gay people are disgusting. I don't want to picture what it's like when they have sex with each other." Well, maybe I don't want to watch it either...but I'm not asking to be invited into their bedrooms to be a spectator. Because you know what? I don't want to watch any of my straight friends having sex with their spouses either. I would probably find that, for the most part, pretty unpleasant.
It affects nobody but gay people. And they are plenty more affected if you take away a 6,500 year-old human phenomenon away from them than from those who simply don't like it.Roth Army Militia

Mind you, I'd probably be drinking a Belgian Wheat Ale or something. I don't typically go for American beers (or...I grew up in Ontario...Canadian beers).Roth Army Militia

I appreciate what you're trying to say...but this is a fallacy that the right is clinging to...that only their party support God in any way.
Again, I'm agnostic. I don't really give a shit. But I know so many Church-going people who couldn't be paid to vote Republican.Roth Army Militia

I know plenty of people with full bank accounts who get to keep those bank accounts full without resorting to bigotry or accenting their level of white trash ignorance.
Are you telling me that Kid Rock made most of his money AFTER he became a full-on MAGA fuckwit? Hell, no. His actual musical star has fallen far. He made most of his celebrity status before he became Trump's idiot defender.Roth Army Militia
