Well, I really think that the Dave reunion would have been bigger and Sam was doing fine on his own and always did seem to be happy with his model wife, bar, tequila, he gay multiethnic politically correct band and all that. I love the Sammy cheese, though, bro. Always did, even before Van Hagar. Sammy's like Bubbleyum, dude. He ain't promising a fucking 3 course meal.. he's just a little sugar with flavor that you chew on until the flavor is gone. I'm cool with that and Sam is too. Van Halen should be a little more than that... well, not too much as a party band is a party band. EVH redefined guitar rock, the instrument itself and you can't really think about that too much when considering all these other issues in addition to his downward personal spiral that we've all had to endure these last few. Fair Warning - and what makes that THE BEST album of all time - Van Halen, Van Hagar, or otherwise - has GOT to be David Lee. Because you can have all the greatest guitar riffs all day long and with Sammy Hagar you have "It's About Time". There's not alot happening there, just the bubblegum fun. Don't get me wrong I am not being negative... but it is obvious that the constant here is Ed VH and the variables are the singers. It's literally the reverse of Eddie's "Here's the singer and here are the planets while gesturing circles around his head" argument. Eddie Van Halen cannot be a great gutiartist... nay I say RELEVANT, without David Lee Roth. He's the one that that stayed the same so why is the result so different? Say what you will about me loving both versions of the band... I would NEVER say that they are the same. Roth is not bragging when he calls himself the spiritual leader of Van Halen. There is a big difference between the cover art, anger and theme of David Lee orchestrated FAIR WARNING and the Alex Van Halen album art concept and sammy hagar pussy eating lyrics of 0u812. I was talking to Pabs the other night about the new tune, and the dude goes "The music doesn't even match the lyrics" and I couldn't deny that. The music is angry and aggressive, depressed EVH and the lyrics are happy go lucky Sammy Hagar bubblegum.
David Lee was OWED the VH job. He could have worked with anyone else since '85, maybe like the guns n STP superband, etc, look at what grohl did with the footos after the shotgun blast. It was TOTALLY doable. He came close with Vai, but really... Dave never lost that focus on Van Halen. You gotta admire that, especially in light of what's happening now after 4 years of trying to make the real thing work out.
