Technically, WarnerChappell music publishing is a separate entity from Warner Brothers records, so a continued publishing deal doesn't necessarily mean they still have a record contract.

Even some highly successful WB "legacy" recording artists were not able to get a new deal with the label when they reformed. Heaven & Hell, for example. WB was willing to release the initial "best of" Dio years compilation which contained three new songs. And they were willing to cash in on the "limited edition" live album from a 1980 show. But when it came time for a new studio album from Dio, Tony, Geezer, and Vinny, WB passed and they ended up signing with Sanctuary or whatever. WB already passed on the remastering of DLR's solo albums, which probably would have made some money for the label, since they were re-released at a time when Dave was keeping a relatively high profile, going from the radio gig, to the bluegrass thing, and eventually the Van HALen reunion tour.

So while I would hope that WB would be ready to promote the return of a band that sold over 50 million albums for them, it's not exactly guaranteed just because of the publishing deal.

      You are correct, Sir.

And WB are a bunch of FUCKSTUMPS if they do not sign a deal for the new album.

I'm looking forward to hearing what Ed's going to do with that riff he played on that Charlie Sheen appearance.
He's played it at Namm shows and various interviews and it's a great riff and I'd be willing to bet he built it into something, since he obviously feels strongly enough about it to play it repeatedly.

Dave can still bring a hell of a performance to the table studiowise, as evidenced by Take Savara.
I don't think we'll be disappointed by this upcoming release, if it ever sees the light of day.

Well, in terms of ultimate control, the people manning the helm these days are Ed and Al. It's been that way since 1996, so there's really nothing new there. That being said, even Ed and Al know without Roth the band is a dead duck re: touring (unless there are a bunch of promoters willing to back up another failed Sam Halen reunion).

It'd be neat if the band were actually gearing up to release some new music with Dave, but in spite of the recent deluge of confirmations in the press to that effect, I'm still not holding my breath. Given the state of the record industry and the fairly low stats for established acts and new album sales, WB may well decide that it wouldn't even be worth their while to bother negotiating a new record deal/contract with Van Halen, even for a one-off release. Plus, major labels these days are insisting on a cut of tour proceeds, so assuming WB would ask the same of Van Halen, why would Van Halen even bother enetering into such an agreement when they could do at least one more oldies tour with Roth without even bothering to record a new album or split the profits with WB? Ed's lazy, and the band has opted to take the path of least resistance for so long that to actually go to the trouble of inking a new deal and sign on with a record company that would actually expect something out of the band in terms of productivity just runs counter to Eddie's strategy of hunkering in the bunker for years on end and making a cash grab every four years or so.

Christ, if they had half a clue they would form VH Records and release it on their own. Their only concern would be a distribution deal.
They could sell the songs on iTunes etc. as well as on tour. They could make a shit load of money that way. They could get all of the "points" instead of having to share it with a record company.

              Let's do some math here...
Each show has an average of 15k tix sold. If 50% of the fans buy a cd @ $20 a pop that's 7,500x20 = 30k a night in album sales. Multiply that by, say 100 dates...

750,000 units sold = $1,500,000 in cd sales based on a 50% buying audience....

I'll believe it when the fucking album is in my Jaegermeister-stained hands. Stand the fuck by for Janie Van Halen to bust our bubble with a friendly "It's not an official statement from the band. We have no updates at this time".

                  True dat!

What I meant was, if WB has a fucking clue, they will do anything to get VH to sign a one album deal.

If the sisters have a clue, they will do a distro deal ONLY.

Ok....so we have now seen an official announcement.

Wanna bet the sisters are furious that someone let the cat out of the bag?

How long before the denials start to roll down from Howdy-Doody Mountain?

Only time will tell if we stand the test of time.

you drunk? thats 15 million pal. 7,500x20=150,000x100=15,000,000 sorry not bashin ya, you cant add and i have terrible punctuation, plus i cant spell worth a fuck.

vanhalen wont make alot off a new record but if they can get just 1 #1 song and some other good songs on a new album they will strike it rich touring. they aint gonna make shit selling records these days. if they can do a world tour and make 150 million on ticket sales, all will be good in daves world.

                    this is very good news.

Yeah, and that makes me sick...as someone who has been there since '78 when they were a band...

                          Anyway...

Hadn't seen this tidbit yet that was added to one article today...maybe not new...

Meanwhile, Van Halen manager and Live Nation Entertainment executive chairman Irivng Azoff mentioned on a conference call last month and an earning's call last night {Those who took this year off include Kenny Chesney, Fleetwood Mac, Van Halen, Neil Diamond and Christina Aguilera. They all plan to tour next year, pushed by declining revenue from recorded music sales, he said.} that Van Halen was expected to tour next year.

The old record company model of the music biz is over - artists with selling power (and who knows, maybe VH no longer have that ...) hold the upper hand. VH should lookat what Radiohead did when their contract with EMI expired. Well - they seemed to give an album away, but actually made a shed load of cash. I just happened to be reading this last night about that Radiohead album, 'In Rainbows':

"Although often described as a "free" release, In Rainbows wasn't. Radiohead sold 100,000 £40 "disc boxes", 1.75m CDs, and the band even made money from the digital version, when they asked fans to pay what they could. What's more, the "pay what you want" offer was only available from October to December 2007. In Rainbows is now available on iTunes for £7.99."

So, they 'gave it away' first at whatever fans wanted to pay, then released a deluxe box set of vinyl / CD.

Whatever else you say, it was a way of getting your new album noticed. But, with the new wife seemingly in charge of publicity, it'll all probably go tits up ...
