What about the recent AC/DC release that was a WalMart exclusive? That sold really well. Could VH pull off something similar? Honestly, there really aren't music stores anymore. So you either buy it at WalMart, Target, or Best Buy anyways. Why not just go exclusive with the biggest and let them handle the promotion.

Reading this made me think... ok WB had distribution rights for the VH catalog previously... VH in their last tour announcement said this is a deal that will continue... So VH needs to move forward and WB wants to cash in again... With Dave back in the fold here's a business opportunity for both parties.

Ed made some vague comments several months ago about how the record business has changed and peppered it with his own insecurities about how the fans didn't like some of his recent creations... I now read into that, that negotiations were underway back then on how VH can put out a new record. At that time Ed was probably bamboozled with the real world complexity of the business end of it all and as usual pussing out publically like the insecure prick that he is... and blaming the fans, again... typical alcoholic transferrance...

If all this recent activity is cemented in reality... then thankfully the management and "the Lawyers" didn't go hide in thir cave Ed & Al style and it appears deals have been worked out to where the business end of it, ie WB and Azoff are publically speaking and finally for fuck's sake Van Halen the band is in the active end of the mix.

Note on Azoff's statement of those who took the year off... this explains the vague bullshit and tiny turd droppings coming out of the VH crack... er... crackhead promotional team (wife)... The band fully intended to take 2010 off for mariage, honeymoons, high school graduation and some highly anticipated shoe sales and to clean out the garage... ie get rid of Ed's growing junk yard of classic heaps and that damn truck collecting junk where the new misses wanted a new rose garden... As usual, plan to do nothing but keep the fans on the hook with vague crumbs of empty promises to come... classic VH strategy...

If this maintains momentum... I'd expect to hear rumblings of new music, probably some talk of exclusive record sales deals via WalMart, Home Depot or fucking Burger King. I guess I'll allow some sort of optimism to stick to all this given the Corporate entities are making public statements for now.

I am curious as to the business deal at play here... is it a 360, 50/50 or some new twist..?

If you want to learn more about the real business end of the music business here's an excellent source... also click on the all clips link on the page for more...

Probably not... VH isn't that business smart.

Here's the best writeup on AC/DC's business model I've ever seen. From a business perspective it's almost pure genius...

I believe that at this point, Edward Van Halen becomes "bamboozled with the real world complexity" of choosing which flavor of Pop Tarts his wife offers him while standing next to the toaster oven at breakfast. The only thing this deal solidifies is a guarantee that whenever CVH music is used as a novelty in some film project, he and his dopey brother will get paid for it.

By recording and distributing new music themselves, either at a concession stand on an upcoming tour or online at their own site, Van Halen wouldn't even have to sell a million or more records to generate profits comparable to an album released on a major label. Even if by going the indie route or paying for the manufacturing costs themselves the band only ended up taking in 25% of each cd sold as a net profit, that's still a fuck of a lot better percentage than they'll get from any major label. Plus, they get 100% creative control. Yes, recording the album themselves and then selling it online (either in a downloadable form or taking orders and then shipping the cds) or as a concession at tour date stops represents more work, but fuck, man...I paid $30 for a fucking t-shirt at the 2008 show. I'd have gladly paid another $30 for a new Van Halen cd at the same time.
The broader point is there are plenty of ways to get new music released that bypass the traditional methods of record distribution. Sadly, I think ZahZoo and chef are right in that Ed is just too drunken, lazy and unmotivated to do anything along those lines. The last EVH interview I read in GW came off like Ed didn't even want to bother unless some magical guarantee could be made to him beforehand that all the fans and critics would like it and it would ship triple-platinum. For some, news of a tour next year might be a good thing. I suppose when you're a CVH fan used to crawling through the desert in terms of productivity from the band, ANY activity seems like it's heaven-sent. However, this band just ain't what it used to be. I thought with Roth back on board things would start to pick up, but everything seems to be done on Ed's slacker timetable now. For fans who remember the CVH days when the band was doing an album and tour virtually every year, latest announcements such as Eddie endorsing some new Frankie-logo line of tennis shoes or appearing on some lame-ass sitcom just aren't fucking cutting it.

All things being equal, I'd rather see them go with Best Buy or Target before WalMart.

Something about WalMart's core clientele just makes me shudder at Van Halen shilling their music through THAT outlet. Call me a snob, but I don't really want to be lumped in with WalMart's customer base as a Van Halen fan.

Can't you see it now? Red, white and black striped cardboard displays holding the first six VH CDs and greatest hits albums, along with various (thinly) VH-related items like guitar strings, straps, bumper stickers, protractors, pen & pencil sets, folders and backpacks just in time for the "Back To School" season?

Much as I hate to say it - 'cos money shouldn't matter if its rock'n'roll - this band needs a business-savvy manager. It seems no one has the balls to take the initiative from Eddie. Damn - has there ever been a more guileless band of this magnitude in rock-n-roll? The legacy just continues to fritter away. Probably the biggest American band of its era - and they are invisible. Look at The Doors - a singer dead nearly 40 years and they are still releasing stuff! Over here in the UK when the Stones re-released Exile on Main St. earlier in the year it was all over the fuckin place - nationwide TV specials, billboards as if it was a new album, multi-format editions at premium prices (as well as bog standard CDs). That was all because Jagger made it happen - for a RE-RELEASE ...

Somebody up there at 5150 needs to make it happen in a like fashion, or it will be a damp squib of an event - that's if it ever happens.

Maybe in retrospect, Van Halen would have been better off with Chaim Witz as their manager. Say what you want about KI$$ musically, but nobody's marketed the shit out of a band so successfully since Brian Epstein ate too many sleeping pills.

W/C state there will be a van halen album out next year, but they get basic information about the band wrong, You have to wonder on what they are basing this new album stuff on
