Too late, he already claimed that on III. In one of the two Guitar World features published when the album was released, Ed claimed that while he was editing one of the songs, his son said "But that's the best part" or words to that effect, so EVH left that part in the tune.

Ed just doesn't have a good ear behind the mixing board. That much is clear.

Wolf at this point...I get the feeling without him being in the band, Roth wouldn't be there either. Wolf was useful less for his instrumental abilities and more for easing Ed's emotional stability: pretty much if having the kid in the band was what it took to get the ball rolling between Roth and Ed, well...Anthony should have been there, but so be it. Playing with his kid might be the only thing that would even inspire Ed to come up with some new material and release it at this point. It's clear he didn't have much use for Anthony on any level for quite some time.

Yeah, if it ends up being an Eddie Van Halen production recorded at 5150 with no outside producers, that wouldn't be such a great sign. I'd still buy the thing and wait until I heard the music before making the call, but Ed had gone that route before (for all intents and purposes it was done on 5150, OU812, a good chunk of F*U*C*K and Van Halen III - no small coincidence that Balance was one of the better sounding albums of the Van Hagar years, nor that 1984 recorded at 5150 was one of the weaker sounding ones of the CVH years) and the results haven't been that great.

If we get an album of 10 new songs with Dave singing to Ed's guitar playing...I don't really give a shit what the production sounds like. I will just be happy to hear any new grooves from them. Even at their worst they are still better than 99% of anything else coming out nowadays.

Agreed. I'm just interested to see how the EVH 5150 amps sounds when they're mic'ed up all nicely, instead of blowing up speakers in an arena :D

Ted's not retired..........he's producing the latest Doobie Brothers Album, according to various sources...........
Johnston, Simmons and the band's two other longtime members, Michael Hossack and John McFee, reunited with producer Ted Templeman to record a new album, “World Gone Crazy,” due out in September. Templeman produced the band's first nine albums, which gave him enough leverage to persuade Johnston to re-record the first song they ever did together, 1971's “Nobody.”

That might be the best news yet. It shows that Ted is willing to get into the studio with a band whose classic recorded sound, he helped create, and if he'll do that with the Doobies, then why the Hell not Van Halen?

Simple: The Doobies have grown into professional, responsible and mature artists. Not one of those terms have even loosely been applied to Van Halen since sometime in the eighties. Would you want to work with such a headache in your twilight years?

                    who mixed "Diamond Dave"?

THAT was a GREAT sounding recording!

But of course we'd rather hear original songs....

                      Make up your mind!

First there's "nothing to report" now apparently there is...from Ultimate-Guitar.com

It's Official: Van Halen Are In The Studio

Despite recent denials it seems that Van Halen ARE in the studio and that we can expect a new album next year.

Last month reports emerged that the band were back in the studio recording their first new album since 1998 and their first with Dave Lee Roth since 1984. These reports were then quickly denied by the band.

BUT now a statement has been released by the band’s record label that says that they ARE in the studio.

The news comes as Warner/Chappell Music extended their publishing deal with Eddie and Alex Van Halen, and a statement was issued that ended with:

"Most recently, the band toured with founding brothers, Eddie and Alex Van Halen, its original lead singer, David Lee Roth, and Eddie's son, Wolfgang, playing bass. The group is currently in the studio recording an album with Roth that is due for release in 2011."

We will most definitely bring you more on this one as and when we get it.

Thanks for the report to PlanetRock.com.

Nothing new. It is not a statement from the band, it is just a re-statement of what was posted above.

I still expect Janie (Mrs. Anti-publicity) to release a statement claiming it is all rumours.

The only thing this broad has done to raise VH's presence is to start Facebook,Myspace and Twitter pages with little or no updates. Total FAIL!
During the "reunion" press conference they did the right thing and turned Dave loose on the press. That was pretty much the last time we heard from him aside from the interview outside of the fashion show (or whatever the fuck it was). They sold us the idea that this was a "new" band that is looking to the future... Well we're in the fucking future now and they have shown little evidence that they are even a band !
No photos of them together (post tour), no interviews, not even an actual quote from a bandmember... Nice work Janie....FAIL!

The only reason Janie has the job is because she's Ed's bitch.
