    I still want to know.

who's out there demanding that we hear from sam hagar? he's irrelevant now. He's been irrevelant since 2004, and when he was relevant for brief bits of time. He's not funny, he's a bitter old asshosle.

Why does RS and others assume we want to hear what this guy says? Don't give this guy attention. Don't feed the trolls, let him toil away in his shit tequila in mexico to never grace us with his presences or music ever again.
Still waiting for a relevant Browns Team

Nature abhors a vacuum. If Roth and the Van Halen's were out there doing interviews and their jobs in general then no one would be asking the pointless pint sized pinata anything.

How old were all of their songs when VH1 hit the shelves? How many "OLD" songs did VH use on 1984? House of pain was at least 10 years old as evidenced by the myriad early demos floating around.
Pretty much the first three albums were all songs from their club days 1974 - 1977. WACF actually had some of their oldest songs, with "Take Your Whiskey Home" and "In A Simple Ryhme" being two of the songs that were originally recorded on the band's first demo at Cherokee Studios in 1974, before Mike Sobolewski even joined the band. Theoretically, Mark Stone probably should have got a writing credit for those songs. Not that he probably wrote them, but Mikey got a credit on all the records and he didn't write shit either. Nor did Alex.

And yeah, the old material was still utilized to a lesser extent on the second half of the six-pack, averaging one song per album: Mean Street was a rewritten Voodoo Queen, Hang Em High was previously known as Last Night, and the House of Pain on 1984 really didn't sound much like the original, but at least they kept the title. Still don't know how that one got cut from the first album, but I'd bet they recorded it then, with the end fading into the car horn and then into RWTD, just like on the demo.

...and that is precisely why most bands first album's are typically the best - the songs have been written for years, tweaked and refined to the point of perfection... and what I'm saying is no secret to anyone here, but that is what I think. Additionally, he probably didn't have retards telling him what parts to add in order to properly ruin perfectly innocent songs... perhaps that's why we didn't hear HOP for another 6 years; it was simply missing something.

                FUCK YOU!!!!!

It was probably his cheese-infested mediocrity that ruined the musical structure of "don't tell me what cheese can do".. I mean the main riff is fucking cool - palm muted sideways pick scraping, fucking killer..

Old music or not, it was recorded and THEN sent to Dave for him to sing over. Not exactly a collaborative endeavor as it was back when. now it seems Dave is getting the tunes in the mail with a note that says "sing this melody over this". Ed wrote some good songs with Hagar that Roth coulda sung over, but all of that music is dismissed out of hand and/or with extreme prejudice. Some of the VHagar stuff isn't very good at all, some of DLRs solo stuff isn't very good at all. Nobody can say for sure what the next VH albums woulda sounded like if Roth never left, but it seems if Roth is on it, it's is automatically manna from heaven. When this album comes out we will finally know if the break was worth it because the music is so good or the break was necessary because the well ran dry and, as has been said, "you can't go home".

Who are you, their courrier? Their foot messenger? Who is absolutely certain Dave recorded everything away from the band as you suggest? Nonsense. Baseless nonsense.

There is no such thing as OLD music. If we haven't heard it and it has never been recorded or released....IT'S FUCKING NEW! Jesus H Christ already with the "it's old stuff" bullshit. So what if they listened to old outtakes for inspiration, for a smack in the head to bring back some of that old vibe, magic, mojo. I look at old pictures of family reunions, parties, christmas dinners and they sometimes give me inspiration and ideas for what we can do at the next one. But we never throw an OLD party.

So 21st century Van Halen is looking at the yearbook of 20th century Van Halen to jar those feelings & memories and get the juices flowing. BIG FUCKING DEAL!

Actually most music in the "recording age" is handled like this in bands. If you had a tune in the reel to reel/cassette age, you would try and demo that to the other members of the band, and especially if you are looking for a Melody from your singer. We did it all the time when working on new stuff. Sammy does that with "Satch" even now.

Dave talks about that this is how the band worked Always.

Now I do not know about how much music you have ever played in a band or how many albums you have recorded (or demos) but that is just frequently how you share the music with your band. Dave used to talk about all the raw music Eddie would send him and how he would write tunes over it while he drove.
