Another shining example of how nothing in the world of Van Halen comes easy. However, for once I could actually see this being Dave's call and not just Ed pouting because someone spoiled his surprise. If Dave really is taking the reins as has been suggested, then he might have told the Grammy's to screw when some intern tweeted the news. Dave is business savvy, but he's old school, too. This can be a blessing and a curse in the digital age, but there it is - let's hope Dave keeps up to speed with how the news-in-an-instant thing works. As for Dave himself - and maybe this has been put out there already, but I'm just thinking out loud here so bear with me - is it possible his absence over the last couple of years is due to having a nip and a tuck? I'm not talking anything major - not like a freakshow Botox Steven Tyler nightmare - but maybe ironing out a few wrinkles and getting back ten years or so that were lost to the Cherone and Hagarita reunion fiascos. I don't think there's anything wrong with rock stars aging gracefully (I think Jagger and Richards are a prime example), but Dave being Dave, I can't help but wonder...
Back to the Interscope topic: And again, assuming (or maybe hoping) that Dave is taking the lead on this front, I think it all comes down to packaging - assuming, of course, that the band doesn't break up and that there is, indeed, a finished album in the can. These days no album of any stature can be released without several different options being made available. You've got the bare bones release for $9.99. You've got the Collector's Edition with bonus tracks. You've got the Deluxe Edition with bonus tracks and behind-the-scenes DVD and collector guitar picks and coupon for Ed's sneakers and flip-flops. And you've got the digital album available for download. That VH has signed with the label that U2 is on is encouraging that one or two of these options might actually be made available - but that brings us back to my first point. This IS Van Halen, and it can all change on a dime...
