OK, it's a chicken or the egg sort of argument, saying VH created that expectation in the first place, but you can't have one without the other. And his comments over the years ("ten albums in the can", ect) have only raised that expectation. Nor has his concept of selling everything under the sun except new music helped matters. But the point is, if you find yourself wringing your hands or breaking out in a cold sweat about anything Van Halen might be doing at this late stage of the game, you are a dimwit, and you only have yourself to blame for that.
The fans hardly created the scenario. Van Halen fans are the most loyal and patient fans on the planet. The problem is, the band has a history of not recognising those who support them and their communication with their fanbase is poor to say the least - hence the endless speculation which turns from being fun to frustrating.

The only positive is seeing Dave back at the helm - Ed's playing is shit, Pugsley replaced Mikey on bass, and absolutely no indication in my mind that the album that comes out won't be a sloppy, slushy four-single EP with one of the tracks being an audio interview or some shit.

As far as I'm concerned, they have to win me over all over again. Unless they can recreate the moment where I heard Fair Warning and said "WTF?!" they're done in my mind.

Sign me up for the boxed set and go away quietly, with some dignity. Don't pull a Michael Jordan/Brett Favre on us.
Well, the odds of them coming up with something that is gonna be on the same level as Fair Warning...I mean, fuck...1000:1 would be generous odds there. I'd like to see the band charged up. rarin' to go and playing like they have something to prove. Kinda hard for a decade of alcohol and drig-induced sloth to be swept aside, though.

At this stage of the game, I'd also just as soon see a CVH box set and have the band retire if the only reason for them existing is gonna be golden oldies tours (which would be a pitiful way for them to bow out). I'll give 'em 2007-2008 in the context of even if that were the last thing they ever did it would still (even with all the faults of Anthony not being there, no new music and a diminished EVH) be miles above ending it all with either Van Halen 3 or the 2004 Sam Halen reunion.

So the album is either done or it's on hold for whatever reason.

Then again, Sammy Hagar did tell MTV a few days ago he had heard on the grapevine that "they have already fired one producer."
Yeah, well, God Bless you Halen High, and although this might come across as shooting the messenger (which it really isn't):

Fuck Sammy Hagar and his grapevine.

Even if it's true, I will not accept the news coming from Red Fatty Cabo McGee.

The only way I could accept that as the FINAL Van Halen thing is if they released the concert on a DVD. Of course I want a new album & new tour. Heck, even another oldies tour would be good by me. But if they decided to call it a day with 07/08 being it....release it!

Well opinions are like....so I am sure mine is just as dirty as the rest....but I think Me Wise Magic and YCGTSN was of the quality of "Fair Warning"...and fair warning it my favorite Album. The thing that has amazed me is that Dave and Eddie together have not disappointed me yet (1984 was of course one of their weaker efforts...I mean Barre Chords and 16th notes ) but still things like "Top Jimmy" bring them back home. And after all of the years I appreciate the album more. In '96 Dave did not "Cheese" out with lyrics like he does when solo....and Eddie played very hard. Let Ched Head moan and whine all he wants....soothesayers of doom always hope they are right. I know that he never understood Van Halen and never will.

Am I disappointed that the parade ended again in '96.....you bet. But until I stop breathing....I remain a soldier on the army of Dave and Van Halen......so I seek Victory and will not suffer defeat. Unless someone wants to De-Feet Chickenfoot. Funny...if I was in a band that was such a big bad ass....I would not be talking about my last band all the time......

I won't go quite that far. but to me they were vintage VH quality and better than some songs from the 6-pack. I dig 'em fully.

I would counter that by saying if Hausman (who I have complained about with VHND in the past here) started providing "unauthorized" (read: by EVH) updates on the VHND, they wouldn't be "inside" for very long....

It's the same thing as Brad Starks, their "webmaster".... Starks couldn't say anything for years with the exception of crap like "no news is good news"....

So while we collectively get pissed off, we all need to acknowledge that all of these "insiders" are nobody without the express written permission of Edward Van Halen, Inc. (I made that last part up... )....

Same here - I love those songs! Eddie seemed to recapture the fire and Dave delivered with his cool lyrics and cocky swagger. For a brief while, VH sounded like VH again.

I still believe VH will release a new full-length album. I think Eddie wants that for his son as much as anything so it will get done - eventually. And I absolutely believe they can put something out that can live with the CVH years - even Fair Warning.

I'm in my mid 40s so don't talk to me about being old school and it's been over a decade since they first started recording with Dave!!!
Just out of curiosity, do you even bother thinking before you post? Look at your above statement, which I'll now quote:

Dude, I'm not exactly sure what end of the Van Halen argument you are trying to represent. I only realize that I'm pretty much the only one responding to your representation of it.
