I'm curious to hear if the riff Ed played on 2 and a half men is going to be worked into a new tune. He's played it at one of his NAMM appearances. It sounded very up tempo and ferocious.

Will Van Halen be relevant again?
Does anybody else agree that it would be cool if Van Halen included a freshly recorded version of Glitter on their new record? Which unless someone corrects me (and by the way, this is no way a challenge), I believe it is the first ever recording by the Van Halens' and Roth, around 1973?
That would bring the Van Halen's and David Lee Roth full circle and give an appreciation and acknowledgement of the raw talent that they started with, which had them head and shoulders above their contemporaries.
I've attached the youtube video of Glitter below. This appears to be somewhat altered at the very end with a sound effect that has been added by Chris Gossett. If you’re reading this post Chris, I agree with Chef on this one, the sound effect is not required. The song stands up on its own and if the ending was silent, or someone knocked over a mike stand, etc, then I would rather hear that.
Also, to quote Roth when I saw Van Halen on their 1984 world tour, 'You bet your ass this is real... this aint fucking Quiet Riot'. Yes Dave was holding a bottle of Jack Daniels at the time, but the sentiments the same. So Chris we want the reality, not some echo machine you bought, or software you downloaded that takes zero amount of talent to add it to what is actually a historic recording.
Listening to Glitter, I like the fresh raw energy Van Halen had back then; yes they are much older now. But they also didn’t spend weeks or months mixing the sound, which is what we’re hearing reports of now. If Eddie Van Halen makes a mistake then I would rather hear it. He’s a genius, but he’s not perfect. If they mix it and polish it too much I fear they are going to lose some of their edge and we are going to end up with what the record executives’ refer to as ‘product’.
As to the lack of PR and general promotion for this forthcoming Van Halen record. Maybe the record and distribution companies haven’t heard it yet. If not they, like us, are somewhat in the dark, and they don’t know if when Eddie Van Halen finally delivers the finished recordings to them, whether they are going to be listening to a classic gem, such as 1984, or a steaming turd, such as ‘Van Halen III’ or ‘Up For Breakfast’. If that’s the case, that they’ve not heard anything yet, then I doubt they are going to be willing to spend any money promoting it at this point.
Aside from their historical significance, and regardless of your opinion on personalities in the band, in the media and to the masses, (apart from a recent reunion tour with Roth and websites such as this), Van Halen hasn’t been relevant for around 15 years now. Some of us would even argue that it's been more like 26 years. It’s going to take one hell of a record to change that. I for one hope that’s what we will get.Comment

Boosting levels at certain points like you mentioned, deciding where in the stereo spectrum you want each track to land, and adding effects all with the expectation of creating the master. If there are a lot of tracks involved it can get very complicated. Also if you really want the thing to shine you can easily drive yourself nuts having a perfectionist mentality. The thing that surprised me the most was that in many instances just subtle changes in levels here and there can dramatically affect the whole track.Comment

Well, I think there is potential for these new songs to be much better than what they did in 1996.
Because that whole debacle was a ploy to sell more albums -- Ed and Al had no intention of retaining Dave as we know. So, the premise behind those 2 songs were not done under the right circumstances -- not to mention Dave's vocals not being up to par and getting outside writers to get Roth to sing their lyrical shit.
Two in a row, my thoughts exactly! (I apparantly have none of my own, or just don't get here fast enough. Either way. )This space for rent.Comment

The bootleg has been on Youtube for around 5 years now, despite what this Gossett guy claims. "Let Me Swim" is a cover of a Cactus song from their first album, not the unreleased VH original he says it is. The only reason this version could even remotely be called "new" is because he took someone else's recording and overdubbed his own audience noise and ocean sound effects onto it. The original version showed up in 2005 on the Civic Disobedience bootleg from a show recorded at the Pasadena Convention Center, Pasadena, CA - May 29, 1976.
