Universal already had the Stones. They had the post 1970 catalog since 2006 or so, and they had distribution of Allen Klein's ABKCO (who still own the 60's stuff) long before that. So finally, after 35 years, all the Stones music is under one corporate umbrella again.

Maybe they won't be at the Grammy's...
Silly us, assuming that a post on the official twitter account for the Grammys — “Who do you predict the reuniting band will be @ GRAMMYnoms? Does this hint make you wanna ‘Jump’ & ‘Dance The Night Away?’” — suggested that Van Halen would appear onstage Nov. 30 at the Grammy nominations show to announce their reunion plans. A source tells Rolling Stone magazine that a VH Grammy show appearance is not in the cards, although a spokesperson for the Grammys did not immediately respond to a comment request.
That said, Rolling Stone does confirm reports that Van Halen have signed with Santa Monica, Calif.-based Interscope Records, which means the band’s next album will be the band’s first ever not to be released by their longtime label, Warner Brothers. The as-yet-untitled disc, which will also be the first full-length platter with original lead singer David Lee Roth since 1984′s aptly-title ’1984,’ has a rumored February release date.
Van Halen were expected to sign with Columbia Records, but reportedly were pursued heavily by Interscope chairman Jimmy Iovine, who according to the The Hollywood Insider, “heard the band was available and wanted to work with them. It was decided at the 11th hour.” VH were presented with a 360 deal that included marketing, merchandising, touring and recording revenues.
A source told The Hollywood Insider that the Columbia deal was doomed simply because singer David Lee Roth wanted to sign with a West Coast-based label. “He was never on board [with Columbia],” the source revealed. “It was as complicated as anyone would imagine, when one side says black, the other says white. The label was pretty skeptical that things would work out.”
We know about DLR’s thing for ‘California Girls,’ but West Coast labels? We can’t even think of something witty to say about that one.sigpicRoth Army CanadaComment

I think VH never re-signed with Warners back in the early 2000's because all the people that had been connected to the label when they signed in '77 were swept out in the aftermath of some corporate merger process (when Time Inc - publisher of the magazine of the same name, and others - bought out the Warners group, to make it Time Warner) that saw 'outsiders' taking effective control of the label in the mid-90s and changing the way it operated.
Templeman, who was a Vice-President, was a music guy - he was gone; but he was following his mentor, Mo Ostin, the guy who signed VH that night in '77 with Templeman. An interesting guy, who had been Frank Sinatra's business manager back in the late 50s'-early 60s (and founder of the Reprise label - Frank Sinatra's own label - which ... DLR's YFLM came out on). When he and Lenny Waronker were ousted in 95-96, everything at Warners changed.
Warners had been a kind of 'family' label that looked after acts that didn't really sell, but who they thought were worthwhile (Ry Cooder, Captain Beefheart, Van Dyke Parks, etc). Even Ted Templeman's sister was worked at the label - she signed Jane's Addiction. Roberta Peterson was her married name (married to Ted's old drummer in Harpers Bizarre, John Peterson), and I believe she, like Ted, was a Vice President of the company by the 80s as well.
As you can see, fellas, I have too much spare time on my hands ... I was having my morning coffee and there goes half an hour.
P.S. after some googling, Ted's sister left Warners in 95, too. She became director of A&R at Geffen, which is now part of the same stable as ... Interscope. Not that this establishes a connection, y'understand. Just trying to get my brain into gear for the day.
From VHND:
As an extension of the article, sources have told VHND that David Lee Roth was the driving force behind the move to Interscope (A division of Universal – which has a stable of artists such as U2 and the Police) and it seems his desire was to be on a more “hip” label. One that would take advantage of all promotion tools available (such as new media and new technology). While the other three members (Wolf, Alex and Eddie) were ready to go with Columbia, it was Roth who prevailed upon them to go with Interscope and when presented with Interscope’s package they agreed it was the way to go.
It must be noted that, if Roth will be charged with promotions with the new album, Van Halen is in good hands. Simply put, this is something DLR does VERY well. Since Ed and Alex don’t particularly like interviews it seems only natural to place this in the capable hands of Roth, who guided the Van Halen promotional ship from 1978 to 1984.
It’s especially interesting that the band chose Interscope over Columbia mainly because of Roth. It’s also very exciting that the story implies that Roth might do much of the marketing, which makes sense, as that’s what he was born to do! All this shows that Roth has quite a bit of say in what Van Halen does!Comment

In Rolling Stone - behind the news curve, as always, but with the added claim:
Van Halen Sign to Interscope Records
Contrary to reports, they will not be performing at the Grammy Nominations Concert
By Andy Greene
November 14, 2011 2:35 PM ET
Van Halen has signed to Interscope Records, a source with knowledge of the talks tells Rolling Stone. The news was first reported by the Hollywood Reporter, which wrote that Interscope chairman Jimmy Iovine was personally involved with the negotiations, and quoted an "insider" as saying, "He heard the band was available and wanted to work with them. It was decided at the eleventh hour." The deal reportedly includes touring, merchandising, marketing and recording.
Rumors were swirling a few months ago that the band was going to sign with Columbia, but supposedly Van Halen frontman David Lee Roth didn't want to sign with a label on the East Coast. "He was never on board [with Columbia]," the Hollywood Reporter's source said. "It was as complicated as anyone would imagine, when one side says black, the other says white. The label was pretty skeptical that things would work out."
Van Halen haven't released an album of new material since 1998's ill-fated Van Halen III, which featured Extreme's Gary Cherone on vocals. They reunited with Sammy Hagar in 2004 for a tour, but shortly afterwards parted ways with the Red Rocker and founding bassist Michael Anthony. They toured in 2007 and 2008 with David Lee Roth and Eddie's son teenage son Wolfgang Van Halen on bass. There have been numerous reports that the band was recording a new album over the past few years. It will be their first record with David Lee Roth since 1984.
On November 3rd, the Grammy Foundation posted a Tweet that strongly implied that Van Halen would perform at their nomination special on November 30th: "Who do you predict the reuniting band will be @GRAMMYnoms?. Does this hint make you wanna 'Jump' & 'Dance The Night Away?'" However, a source tells Rolling Stone that the band will not appear at the event. A spokesperson for the Grammys did not immediately respond to a request for a comment.

Well if they're not going to appear, it will be interesting to see how they handle the announcement. How dull.
