My Thoughts on the Killing of Osama Bin Laden

I commend the bravery and courage of the SEAL team members for completing their mission. However, while Bin Laden was a disreputable terrorist responsible for the bombings of the USS Cole and our embassies, let us not forget that Osama Bin Laden has never been charged or indicted by the justice department for the attacks on 9/11. Everyone deserves their day in court and you are innocent until proven guilty under our rule of law. What troubles me is that we executed him without even bothering to indict him first. If we are a country that stands by the rule of law then we must follow it, even when it is inconvenient.
Because a country that does not stand for it’s own rules stands for nothing.

Let me also add that they are absolutely FURIOUS about the publicity being given to Seal Team Six, which everyone by now knows is based right down the road here....

The actual official existence of Seal Team Six was always denied. Those of us who worked in military communications knew of it, of course, but nothing publicly. They had an agreement with the local media not to divulge that info as well...

Guess that's all out the window now....

With all due respect to the SEALS, this is pretty hilarious...the time-line for the operation complete with the tweets of the IT geek a few houses down that was complaining about the raid as it happened on Twitter...

It was never really that secret, only this operation that made the headlines has put them a bit more into the popular consciousness. But I doubt most know the difference between Team 6 and Team 1...

True...never heard of numeric team designations before this... like what's the number system based on, level or area of expertise? Is there a Team 7 that Team 6 is scared shitless of?

On training and selection, it's a different level of the elite of the elites. I really don't know that much about the SEALs. But as for the Army, joining the Special Forces and joining the Special Forces Delta Force are two completely different things, and an even more rigorous set of criteria must be met to pass selection. The main difference is that they're specifically geared towards being a "tier one" counterterrorist unit as opposed to a special operations force with a primarily military mission...

Maybe to you, dude. You're obviously well-versed in military organizations and history. Basically, you're not the norm...

In terms of the numbers, they really don't mean a thing, other than their assignments within the SPECWAR community. Sometimes, task group numbers in the Navy signify their place within one of the Fleets. For example, TF 71 would mean a Task Force in the Seventh Fleet (located in the Western Pacific), and the "1" would have a specific responsibility (I recall the "1" is responsibile for Communications).... It gets broken down quite a bit more in the TF organizations, i.e. CTE 71.2.3.1, but you catch my drift....

You can read all about SEAL Team 6 from the guy who created it - Richard Marcinko. I'm not talking about his novels. Hell, you can even watch actual videos of SEAL Team 6 in action from back in the 80s carrying out some of their original missions - infiltrating supposedly secure U.S. military bases and raising all kinds of hell. And there weren't 5 other SEAL Teams when 6 was created - but Marcinko wanted people to think there were. I thought everybody knew about 6, hell, maybe I read too damn much.

Well over here we knew about them last year after they completely fucked up the rescue of of a Scottish Aid worker in Afghanistan by blowing her up with a grenade.

No offence but before the group reach around gets too out of hand I think it's fair to say the difficult bit about special ops is not killing the good guys in difficult circumstances. In this case it seems we had 40 SEALs who seemingly had orders which allowed them to kill anyone in the house, armed or not so maybe not the most difficult operation to perform in military history.

Yep. I'm pissed - but not because I don't believe he's dead. I'm pissed because the administration doesn't want to release the pictures cause they're afraid it will inflame Muslims and incite violence. So basically they're letting terrorists determine America's policy on this. Bottom line is whether we release the pictures or not isn't going to make a bit of fucking difference as to whether there will be any attacks. You can't appease those people but Obama is trying really hard - didn't work with Hitler and won't work with a bunch of ragheads.
