It will be around until the end of time, regardless of whether or not it's recognized by a church or government.

Right now we're just arguing about the legalities in regards to getting it recognized by a government.

It's not going away dude. Deal.
I think what sparked off the gay marriage thing was AIDS. One partner would end up in the hospital and the other one would have no visitation rights. Many times the biological family bars the gay partner from the hospital. When my dad was in the hospital recovering from heart surgery this exact situation was going on and he saw it. He just said something needs to be done where people can make arrangements to have a domestic partner have access. You have a person who has a deep emotional attatchment to someone in the hospital and they can't go visit.

I mean read the New Testament and ask what Jesus would do? Would he laugh and say ha ha ha suckers! Would he have compasion? Oh the Old Testament god probably would have them stoned for homosexuality but would Jesus who fullfiled the old law do so? I doubt it. I don't think the social situation is going to implode any worse than it has because we allow some gay people to have legal unions or marriages if you want to call them that.

And I'm sure my sister and her partner will get a kick out of "most of their relationships break up", since they have been together about 27 years now.

Yep, false generalizations abound. And like I've mentioned before, I have LBGT co-workers who have been in committed relationships that have lasted longer than my hetero friends and I have managed to sustain. It amazes me that people that don't even associate with gay people want to sit there and pontificate on the legitimacy of those relationships - or their love, as if they'd know.

I've also stated I'd like to see divorce stats for straight vs. gay couples say 5 years after same-sex marriage is eventually nationally recognized (and it will be, younger generation thinks older people are stupid for stressing on the issue, and fact is old bigots are going to die out) - what will the opponents of same-sex marriage say if gay unions turn out to be more lasting than straight ones?

The only reason I can see a government not getting behind the idea of marriage equality among gays is because the church frowns on it. It's really about that simple - the church frowns, so the people who go to church frown. Sheep mentality, if you will. Personally, imo, if the church figures it has the right to protest based on "moral grounds" and expects the legislative body to follow suit, then the church should be paying taxes. Until they do, well...stfu. It's not a slippery slope to me...it's really fairly basic if you take your Godblinders off and really think about it for a minute.

Totally agree, if churches now have the "right" to deny rights to non-member/believers, it should mean buh-bye tax exemption.

The western fianancial system is imploding, we have several wars going, and the government is corrupt and people put more attention to gay marriage. This is what amazes me. We are at a point where if you have any assets in a fianancial institution it's at risk. They can steal your money and the government will let them get away with it. The situation is that bad and people are having a tizzy over a very small group of homosexuals wanting to get married? Who cares. They say our civilization will fail if we allow it. Well take a look now. Our civilization is failing already. If you don't have a working financial system you don't have a modern civilization.

I always felt that at the very moment a church, or a religious group starts to endorse a political candidate, law or donate money towards their campaign or vice verse, that yes, the tax-exempt status needs to be taken away.

I don't go to church to hear about how god hates gays, rock music, drinking and abortion. I go there to renew my faith and have me try to act more in line with christ.

It would be nice if all churches focused on that aspect.

it'd be also nice if any group with "Family" in the title, also fucked off.

I agree with Jesus Christ AND Thomas Jefferson on the separation of church and state.

Churches have no business saying who can or cannot enter into a marriage contract.

The state has no business saying what ceremony a church/synagogue/mosque/republican satanic coven can or cannot perform.

As far as the taxation thing goes, I would think that churches should be taxed, but with exemptions for things that would legitimately be considered "God's work".

For example, the Catholic Church has legitimate charities that feed and house the homeless, as JC said you should do, and these things should be tax exempt. However, Opus Dei, or the Defend the Pedophile Priests Legal Fund (or whatever it's called) or "Catholics In Favor of Suing Pharmacies Who Do Their Job And Sell Birth Control Pills" are clearly about politics and should be taxed.

Obviously this applies to other religious organizations as well. I just used the Catholics as an example because it's obvious where the lines can be drawn there.

Chicago GOP to file complaint against Rahm Emanuel over Chick fil A flap

The Chicago Republican Party announced last week it would file a complaint with the Illinois Department of Human Rights and Attorney General Lisa Madigan over the discriminatory action by Alderman Proco (Joe) Moreno against the food chain Chick-fil-A.

The party is now expanding their complaint to cover Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel as well. According to a press release, the Chicago Republican Party says that "the complaint states that the Alderman and the Mayor have broken civil rights laws pertaining to religious freedom and the First Amendment in denying Chick fil A a permit to operate its business in the City of Chicago."
