Wandering off topic but on the Time magazine person of the year thing an interesting one is 1951

He was Iran's first democratic elected prime minister who defied the British control of the Iranian oil industry and administration introduced a wide range of progressive social and political reforms such as social security, rent control, and land reforms.

A couple of years later Britain could take this outrage no more and with the CIA arranged a coup where he was taken out and replaced with a brutal dictator who ruled for another 20 years.

This is why Iranians don't like the US and UK and we have so much misery to this day.

I often wonder how many Americans and British know this? Would that not be a useful thing to teach in schools?

There's a ton of Christians, who either risked or lost their lives trying to hide jews during the holocaust. Whom felt it was their duty to do so.

Your point is not well-taken, and dumb.

It would indeed. I had always been fascinated about the 1979 Iranian Hostage crisis.

I would argue though that they were noble brave people who would have done it without religion but due to their humanity and morality.

The leadership of the catholic church in particular was complicit in Nazism across Europe and so it's likely that more Jews would have been hidden if people weren't led by them.

Jews have been persecuted throughout history by Christians in Europe. If there was no religion then they would merely have been another race among many and not singled out so many times.

I was young but at the time my memory is of the media telling me a mad evil bastard had deposed a nice man called the Shah and taken Americans hostage.

As with most things it turns out it was a bit more grey than that...

The fact is, the Catholic Church caught on faster than Time did.

In 1936, Archbishop Cesare Orsenigo, Papal Nuncio to Germany, asked Cardinal Pacelli, then Vatican Secretary of State, for instructions regarding an invitation from Hitler to attend a Nazi Party meeting in Nuremberg, along with the entire diplomatic corps. Pacelli replied, ”The Holy Father thinks it is preferable that your Excellency abstain, taking a few days’ vacation.”

In 1937, Orsenigo was invited along with the diplomatic corps to a reception for Hitler’s birthday. Orsenigo again asked the Vatican if he should attend. Pacelli’s reply was, “The Holy Father thinks not. Also because of the position of this Embassy, the Holy Father believes it is preferable in the present situation if your Excellency abstains from taking part in manifestations of homage toward the Lord Chancellor.”

During Hitler’s visit to Rome in 1938, Pius XI and Pacelli avoided meeting with him by leaving Rome a month early for the papal summer residence of Castel Gandolfo.

In 1937 Pope Pius XI issued the encyclical Mit brennender Sorge condemning Nazi ideology, notably the Gleichschaltung policy directed against religious influence upon education, as well as Nazi racism and antisemitism. Pius XI's encyclical Humani Generis Unitas was never published due to him dying before it could be issued, but the similar Summi Pontificatus was the first encyclical released by his successor (Pius XII), in October 1939.
I dunno I think there was a lot of shit that went on with both Pius XI and Pius XII and the fascists. I'm a bit rusty on it and it is an area where you need to be careful of historian agendas on both sides of the argument but my understanding was always those 2 popes didn't cover themselves in glory at all.

That's what sickens me about Christians and other religious zealots ---- living in denial about the truth and pretending that their faith is above criticism or reproach.

The first step in being objective and intelligent is to acknowledge the TRUTH ---- no matter how ugly or horrific it may be. Only then can you walk the road to redemption.

That's why I will always admire free-thinkers like Carl Sagan or Richard Dawkins ---- I don't see atheists demanding that people be murdered because they don't believe in black holes or human evolution.

There have been a number of Popes throughout history who did not cover themselves in glory. But by the time Pius XII became Pope it was 1939, in the fall of that year Germany rolled through Poland like an Impala through a Snoop Dog video and I wouldn't blame them if they were a little frightened at the prospect of trying to stand up to the Nazi regime.
