The top tax rate in the US used to be 91%. The Republican President Eisenhower was fine with this tax rate, and he used the money to build the Interstate Highway System. Of course he also started building all those missiles to keep the Commies away, and towards the end of his term began building the space program.

JFK lowered the top tax rate a little. Reagan lowered it a lot. Chimpy lowered it to ridiculous levels. Not coincidentally, there hasn't been any major national infrastructure built in this country since the freeways. Including the maintenance on those very roads & bridges since the most recent Chimp tax cuts. Some of the bridges were there even long before the freeways. The southbound side of the Interstate 5 bridge over the Columbia river from Vancouver Washington to Portland Oregon was built in 1917 and was part of the old US highway 99 before the freeways existed.

This is the major north south corridor of the West coast states. If that bridge collapses, not only is it likely to kill a few hundred people immediately (always a high traffic area) it's going to have significant economic impact on all the West coast states, and probably adjoining states which get anything shipped by truck down the I-5 corridor. It would cost much less to tax the rich leeches and fix the thing pre-emptively than wait for the disaster to happen and then have to clean up the huge mess on any number of levels.

But the right wing greed culture created by the FAUX/Mush/Trump mentality just cannot grasp that reality.

Personal taxes never need to be higher than 50% the problem is a combination of corporations no longer paying, stupid defence spending and bailing out a corrupt banking system. None of this has anything to do with personal taxes. There is a tipping point anyway once you get much over 50% everyone starts employing accountants and setting themselves up as mini corporations or whatever so the gross take starts to go down. That's not a political point, it's just a fact that they all know.

It's worrying that people like DonnieP are believing this Trump 90% thing it shows how well the BS is working.

It's changed quite a bit in our lifetimes but I think it would surprise a lot of Americans to realise that most European governments tax take is really not much higher at all. It's difficult and complex to compare and varies depending on how much you bring in but attempts to compare have it within a couple of percent especially if you factor in healthcare.
