I know these guys may be too old for you, but they really kicked serious ass on stage during that Tour!. Just put on an awesome 2.5 hour show. Great seats were 1/2 current VH 2004 Tour prices.

We got all the new charts, VH ticket sales data, secondary market resale data, and some direct VH venue reports in this afternoon. My assistant Trixie is sorting out the data files right now, and I'll post here later today on the results.

Don't see much change, more CCC/WMG rigging the numbers to make the Charts look 3 times better than they are in fact. The R&R airplay chart, for example, showing VH's IAT moving from 10th to 5th position is total manufactured rubbish. I probably need to post how that chart works and how the sample poll numbers are pulled together to develop it.

We're making a big sweep of the VH numbers this time, so we will have good "benchmarks" before the Tour starts Friday. The new direct VH venue reports are quite interesting. It's the first time we have received them to-date.

STP fucking rocks!! They are awesome. It really sucked that they broke up. I picked up the Velvet Revolver album a few days ago, and it's totally awesome. I'm way more excited about that than the new Van Halen.

I hear EVERYBODY talking about Velvet Revolver. The only thing I'm hearing people say about Van Halen is, "Where is Dave?"

Yep, everybody is talking about VR. I've read their album will be #1 next week, which is unexpected, but a pleasant surprise for the band.

I love STP as well. My brother, who's a big fan, said that when Scott was recording with VR, the DeLeo brothers (who are in STP) were producing Alien Ant Farms new album in the studio next door. He went over to talk to them, and they had a good talk, and apologized to each other (I guess they didn;t get along too well on their last tour), so that might not be the end of STP. Who knows.

Im guessing its all relative, Van Halen sold three times as many albums as Van Hagar. I bet the concert sales would reflect this also..

Theres just not enough of them out there. Not enough people care about Van Hagar. I cant believe Azoff got suckered into thinking the numbers were there ?? Any one of us from here could have told him the cold reality of the situation..

1. Bottom line, single and even album chart's are worthless on this type of Tour. Seen too many "mature" bands with crappie single/album chart's make a killing Touring. Why?, because these bands cater to the 30-50's diehard rockers, and that's where the big Tour money is. This fan base doesn’t care much about a new single/album, and idiots like Eddie V that always want to play new and directionally different stuff. etc. All they want to hear is the old hits, played just like the old days, with some of the old vim and vigor. That's why AC/DC has just killed VH in Tour gross sales and sold 20+ million albums more that VH, while still effectively living off the 1980 Back in Black album/song structure and Angus's stage antics.

Same thing with the #1 Rock Fusion guitarist in the world Joe Satriani. How long is Joe going to live of his brilliant Extremist album. Seen that guy 4 times now. Didn’t even want to go the last time, but got talked into because we again had front row seats right in front of Joe. Ended up glad I went, Joe was “dialed-in/on” that night and just blew the roof off the place playing mostly the same stuff I heard the last 3 concerts. I/my group had an awesome time and Joe playing at a very rare level I had never seen before.

Ozzy same deal, nobody that makes these concerts highly successful, i.e. the 30-50 yo market, cares about the new stuff. They want to see Ozzy & Zakk Wylde rip up the Rhodes era stuff and Ozzy be Ozzy.

I, and many others, including CCC executives, don’t understand why Eddie V can’t get any of this through his thick skull. But he is not alone. The two times I have recently seen Jeff Beck play, he suffered from some of these Eddie problems and hurt his Tour venue promote and sales. Just the opposite, John Melencamp, never had an unsuccessful National Tour. Plays his best oldest stuff, with a little of the new, and bust his arse for two straight hours.

Hopefully, this helps understand better why current single & album sales for “mature” rock bands are not good indicators of success or failure.

Yes yes yes yes. You are sooooo 100% right on this. I NEVER understood this mentality with some musicians. Well, actually I do - ego. I think Ed and some of these others are examples of casualties of modern pop culture which says if it's more than a year old it sucks, ain't cool etc. Why is it not ok to want to hear and play music that was written 20 years ago? Get over yourselves already.

Sorry for the delay on posting the charts that came out late Wednesday, as attached in the following posts. I’m not going to say much on these because they don’t have any real meaning for the VH Tour IMO. The whole chart business is going the way of the dinosaur because of what consolidation has done to the airplay business. They are just part of the music biz’s infomercial game and doesn’t represent market actuality or condition most of the time. The only thing that matters here is net collected balances in the bank from VH Tour and Album sales, and that is what I will report on once data starts coming in.

However, it is interesting to note on these charts:

1. The continued tremendous success of Velvet Revolver. Van Halen has stolen none of “Guns & Velvet’s” thunder as VR hits number one on the charts. This is despite the fact that VR is doing only a very limited small venue Tour, and is totally outgunned by CCC & WMG massive promotion and financial commitment to the Van Halen Tour.

2. The strength of Shinedown on the Charts is interesting since they are the opening band for Van Halen on a number of Tour dates. Based on the Charts and VH’s horrible new material, VH should be the opening act for Shinedown on this Tour! Here’s a brief article from the fine people at KNAC:

3. I’ve bitched in several posts, why the hell CCC/WMG haven’t followed AC/DC 2000 Tour plan, that CCC promoted, and the Tour was a massive success. If Eddie & Alex were this big of a problem going into this deal, CCC should have walked away from the table. Hell they control the National Tour promoting business. The dutchboys can’t Nationally Tour without CCC on board! Every week this Tour keeps getting worse and it just starts tonight.

Know who the opening band was for the highly successful AC/DC 2000 Stiff Upper Lip Tour? - Slash’s Snakepit!! Velvet Revolver would have been perfect to open for Van Halen or Van Halen open for them. LOL. Guarantee Eddie’s f—king ego wouldn’t even listen to the proposal, but nooooooo a band that has sold over 20 million albums more than Van Halen, didn’t have a problem with Slash & the boys opening for their 2000 Tour.

2. Ticket Sales – I‘ll write on this whole scene when I have more time. Lots of interesting stuff surfaced. Basically they are about the same as last week. Crappy, with below face value discounts in the secondary venue markets and OK – Good in the primary A+ venue markets. Your own research has probably shown tons of available seats for the Tour opening secondary market dates. Part of this is CCC’s fault. They held back a ton of good seats on this deal, and then got caught by the soft market. More on this later…..gs

PS: I loved how Guitar World used a good Randy Rhoads piece in their “Eddie Edition” mag that just came out to help sell it! I also loved how they slapped an old picture of EVH on the cover, and how totally crappy and short the interview was. It’s obvious, it was nothing more than a quick phone interview. Give me a break…the whole band has turned into fraudulent hacks!
