Well Good for you. If all mom’s were like you, this world might be a better place to live. Not knocking anyone who takes a kid to this concert, just giving Sparkie her props for doing the right law abiding thing. Personal responsibility sure is lacking in this world today. This argument reminds me about the Fluoride in our water argument we had in San Antonio some years back. I didn’t want our government to put Fluoride a.k.a. Poison in my water. My neighbor was for it and he told me if I didn’t want Fluoride in the water I should pay for water to be shipped to my house. And I told him, if you want fluoride in the water go to Walgreens/Eckert and buy a bottle of Fluoride drops and put the Fluoride in yourself. So who’s right? The people who say, I wanna go see CVH, smoke dope, enjoy themselves and if you’re offended that I’m smoking dope in front of your kids then you should leave. Or the people who paid good money to take their kids to see a great CVH show, they sit next to a person who’s smoking dope and the person with the kid says if getting high is such a priority, do it before the show. The answer to this argument is common sense, the law and respect for others. For all you people who thought the first was right, how would you like it if someone put on a porn video while you and YOUR kid were watching a football game. If you believe the latter, than Sparkie is doing the right thing. Because she’s abiding by the law, she’s using her common sense and she’s respecting other people. We gotta respect her for that.

If getting high is such a priority, do it before the show.

Great common sense. The only thing I could add to this quote is 5 stars!

Kids aside, WTF makes anybody think it's A-the fuck-okay to partake amongst others who may not be so inclined?

I remember my mom/aunts took me to my first concert in 1978 to see The Commodores. What I remembered about that concert was smelling that unique smell that I’ve never smelt before at that time. I remember seeing people smoke a white thing that looks like a cigarette, but smelled 10 times better. After a few songs and a 1000 breaths later, my heart started to groove with the bass guitar, the soda and popcorn somehow started to taste better, the lights looked prettier and I found myself standing on my chair with a lighter in my hand singing “3 Times a Lady.” That was the first time I got high. For the next 14 years I struggled with suicide, addiction and a lot more things I won’t go into. The most stupid statement that I’ve ever heard is, “Pot has never hurt anyone.” Maybe that’s somewhat true in a nice, upscale, suburban neighborhood. But in the real world, that’s a bunch of crap. Watch the BET channel around 2 in the morning and you’ll see what I mean.

If they come down to San Antonio, I’ll be there, but without my kids. Because I know, It’ll get crazy here. WOW... It took me over a 1,000 words to say that.

Yeah, I used to do it, but if I ever did it near someone who was offended by an illegal substance and said person had my ass arrested for it, then my butt deserved it. It's called respect.

Personally, I'm in nearly complete agreement with you. I think parents should do all they can to help their children hang on to that precious innocence that will be gone way too soon. Tiki and I take special care to shield our kid from a lot of shit kids should not be exposed to. Too many parents don't do that these days. I know I made the right decision not to buy her a ticket, but I can't help but think about how cool it would be to share this with her.

Edit: For the record, I'm not leaving my kid at Nana's house cuz somebody might get pissed if I bring her to the show. I just don't think she's ready to handle the noise or the atmosphere. I'm still cool with those parents who are gonna share this incredible experience with their kids. Prepare them and have fun!
Your post is also cool and I agree with you. I also hope you don't think I was generalizing or baggin' about women or thier rights.

I always lit up down against the darkness and kept it cool, but I remember people just passing out joints and sparking them up and
watching them dissapear down the row.

I realize those days are gone what with security these days .

But if memory serves you need to be on the floor or above the first tier
because there possibly is a 10ft thick cloud of second hand hovering across the concert hall.lol

        Roth On.

IF, and I do mean IF I go (which will be either free tickets and if my travel plans change), I'll probably smuggle in an MP3 and record the concert for them, edit out anything they shouldn't be hearing.

Of course, travel will have to be cancelled, and that may yet happen, and I'll need a free ticket...

I brought my 10 yr. old son to Heaven and Hell earlier this year. He loved it, and can't wait for the VH show in Boston. When I showed him the tickets he said, "I hope they play "Unchained" 'cause that's the best song they have." If the kids know (and like) the music, they can handle a show with hearing protection. As others have said in this thread, parents still need to be parents at the show. If I see something I don't want my kid to be exposed to, I distract him so he focuses his attention elsewhere. I know I can do this, because I've done it before.

A lot has been said here on this issue, and things have gotten downright nasty between people who are (supposedly) here to celebrate the same thing....the reconvening of David Lee Roth and Van Halen.

It's obvious that both sides have arguments they believe in strongly and nobody is going to change anybody else's mind about the appropriateness of kids at the show.

For my part, my kid is going....to witness history and to hear the music he loves played live, because honestly, I don't think we'll get another chance.

To those who think that I'm an unfit parent who is exposing my child to some mortal danger or corrupting his morals, I think you're frauds.

Child welfare is not your issue here. It's the sense of entitlement you have that lets you think you can go to a show and act half your age (or more) without having your "style cramped" by the presence of the younger set.

Something tells me that your view of who's "allowed" to go to this show is pretty narrow, and you'd probably feel the same way if you saw some much older folks there as well.

My bottom line is this -

It's an instant information world more than ever before. Kids have access to unlimited information any time of day or night through a dozen different mediums. They know what's going on, and how fucked up the world is, often before us so-called "adults."

We live in a world of sick, twisted people doing unspeakable things to other humans. We live in the world of Jeffrey Dahmers, John Wayne Gacys, Eric Harris' and Dylan Klebolds, and Andrea Yates holding her kids under the bathwater until they die.

We live in the world of Jon Benet Ramsey, who didn't even have to leave her own home for something horrible to happen to her.

We live in the world where we have to explain to our kids why the "bad people" flew the planes into the buildings and killed thousands of people in one shot, without regard for their age.

We live in a world of metal detectors at schools, coupled with clear backpack mandates and armed officers in the hallways.

You want to see corrupted morals and REAL danger to kids? Let 'em go online for 30 minutes. Kids are in MUCH more significant danger of seeing something inappropriate by surfing the web, or of actually having their very lives put in danger by a brief vist to an AOL chatroom.

I'd sooner send my kids to 3 Van Halen concerts back to back before I'd let them hang out in an online chatroom for a half hour from the safety and comfort of my own living room. You can see just a few of these monsters on any episode of "Dateline: To Catch A Predator."

I'd sooner censor my kid from watching the 6 o'clock news before I would tell him he couldn't go rock at a Van Halen show....and I have.

I could go on and on, but I think my point is clear.

It's only Rock & Roll. This is not the Van Halen of 25 years ago...and even they know that.

Passing this experience on to future generations will only help to insure the survival of the music that has always meant so much to us, on so many levels.

"There's a little Van Halen in everybody..."

And on that, I'm done with this thread.

Peace...have a good time at the show doing whatever you deem appropriate, and Roth On!

                        I don't have kids.

                        I'm only 25.

                        BUTT!

I remember well when I was 12. And 17. And I used to think that everyone that tried to shield me from "anything I wasn't supposed to be seeing" was an asshole. Yes, even my parents. I was young.

I don't think my parents are assholes anymore. Especially because they never really tried too hard to shield me from those things.

But I still think people who try to raise their kids in a fuckin greenhouse ARE assholes.

They WILL experioence whatever you're trying to "protect" from. ANd with that mindset, you won't be there when they do. And you probably won't know they did until it's too late.

                        Where am I getting at?

EXPOSE your fucking kids to what's wrong, and then EXPLAIN them WHY it's wrong.

Unless your kid has got some major problems, 99.8% of the times, he'll understand. ANd will thank you, further down the line.

People who believe their kids are too good for this world and should be protected at all times should be shot. It's THOSE people who are raising the whiny brats everyone hates.

TAKE YOUR FUCKIN' KIDS TO THE FUCKIN' CONCERT!

                        Cheers! :bottle:

                          And here's something else:

When I was 14, I went to my first rock concert. AC/DC. My uncle took me there.

                          1. I still love him for it.

                          2. He was a fucking asshole.

                          3. I appreciate the confidence he deposited in me.

                          4. He's still a fucking asshole.

1, because he did take me to the concert. 2, because he didn't want to expose me to drugs - he used to be addicted to heroine - we parted 5 minutes after AC/DC took the stage. He wanted to smoke some weed with his friends. I only realized that a couple of months later. So he left me alone in the middle of the crowd. That's why he's an asshole. And that's why I appreciate his confidence in me. He knew I wouldn't get in trouble. And sure as hell, I didn't. I drank a few beers, partied hard, and we rejoined immediately after the show.

He's still an asshole. I was only 14, fuck it. But it was the one of the best nights in my entire 25 year life.

So, TAKE YOUR FUCKIN' KIDS TO THE FUCKIN' CONCERT!

                          Cheers! :bottle:
