By any measure I would say that makes it a 1983 album.

    Da da.
I dunno, man. I've read everything from New Year's Day to January 9, 1984 as being the release date in the U.S. Quite frankly, I've baked far too many braincells since then to remember when it came out correctly, other than the fact that I bought the "Jump" single (which featured the same artwork on it's sleeve as the album) a few weeks before the LP.

I seem to recall the 1984 album being available for purchase in the first week of 1984, while the Jump single was released the last week of 1983. I could be wrong, since I'm going by memory on this.

Not a shock at all that one source extrapolated a previously debunked rumor as a verification of the band recording and a dozen or so other outlets reprinted the rumor without checking the facts or waiting for a confirmation by either the band or band management (such as it exists today). That shit happens all the time these days. Just "the media" looking for a new story and operating under perpetually loosened rules of having multiple on-the-record sources, veracity and strenuous fact-checking. Hardly the first time a story has been reported without accuracy.

When the cd is in my hands, THAT'S when I'll know the album is ready (duh). Ed's been dicking around in his home studio for a decade, with slender results (results being defined as music I can actually hear: the only results to me that matter). The problem for fans is that since there's a virtual blackout in terms of info coming from the VH camp, this creates the conditions where wishful thinking breeds rumors out of thin air. "There hasn't been a press release saying Roth has left the band. The band aren't touring, therefore they must be recording a new album." It may well be true, but it could also end up producing nothing that's gonna actually make it out of the studio.

As I recall Dave said " Van Halen spent most of 1983 recording 1984."

I recall the week after Christmas, Dec 1983 myself. Although I thought the fucking price was rediculous: it was the highest retail price ever up to that point, $7.99?

WTF was that for? 8 bucks for what? WACF was in the Music Plus bargain bin for $3.99 - and it had the same amount of vinyl the new disc 1984 did right?

So why bite down so hard on the kids? Fuck you Van Halen, I thought.. I'll never buy this one, and I never did. It doesn't sound fat like the other 5 discs did, all fat punchy.. it still sounds thin to this day.

I even prefer hearing the demo to House of Pain than the 1984-version.

An 8-buck new release, fuck that. That was a betrayal as much as a $20 dollar CD. Has anyone here paid twenty bucks for a CD?

Does Van Halens think I'm paying 25 bucks for a new CD if it's got Mike Anthonys vocals on it, and it's a double- or a triple-disc release?

SURE. That would work for me. Let your kid play bass on some kids, give him a boost, sure. But my money wants to hear Mike on it and I'm not paying more than 20 bucks including the FUCKING tax or I swear to G-d it will be the first illegal downloaded album I've ever done. And then after that, I'm gonna download every motherFUCKING Van Halen thing I find online.

Because making me wait OVER I'm talking OVER 25 years for a decent Van Halen album doesnt' cut it, and the overcharging sins of 1984 have not been forgotten.

Oh, by the way should anyone at Warners over there in the valley read this: you could have said NO to Sammy Hagar.

That's both on Van Halen, and on Warner Brothers. Stupid fucks!

The sins of Sammy Hagar must NEVER be forgotten.

So if I was VH's publicist and I wanted to get the band fired up I might leak a press release, false or not ,just to gage the public interest in a new album. Hmmmmm

That would work only if YOU were the publicist, as the current one can't quite think that far ahead, let alone think on her feet.

Who the hell knows at this point...

VH Encyclopedia says Jan. 4th, Wikipedia says Jan 9th....

For whatever it's worth, I know personally I got out of bootcamp in late Jan. '84 and the new album was in stores....

True. And if that is what happened, it worked great. Problem I see is you can only cry wolf so many times before most people quit giving a shit. The Yahoo news busted out as a "reunion" with Roth. They milked that angle 3 years ago, and again now. Only so far it will carry them.
